Lithograph on wove paper. Inscription: Unsigned and unnumbered. Good condition. Notes: From the volume, Carnet de dessins de Picasso: reproduits au format de l'original, 1948; published by Cahiers d’Art, Paris, and Christian Zervos, Paris; printed by Éditions Cahiers d’Art, Paris, 1948. Quoted from the publisher, Edition limited to MCC examples. Full-page illustrations. Also known as “Carnets de Royan”. This series reproduces works made in Royan from 30/05/1940 to 22/08/1940. The end of the volume is composed of studies created in Paris and dated 19/02/1942 – Picasso fled Paris in September 1939, because he fears bombing, and settles in Royan. From the beginning of 1940, he rented a workshop on the 3rd floor of the villa “Les Voiliers” which dominates the port. This notebook belongs to this period of work. Picasso finally returned to Paris in August 1940, Royan being forbidden to foreigners.
PABLO PICASSO (1881-1973) Spanish painter and sculptor is one of the most recognized figures of twentieth century art. During his artistic career, which lasted more than 75 years, he created thousands of works using all kinds of mediums. He changed art more profoundly than any other artist of his time. First famous for pioneering cubism, Picasso continued to develop his art with a pace and vitality comparable to the accelerated technological and cultural changes of the twentieth century. Each change embodied a radical idea, and might be said that Picasso lived several artistic lifetimes.
