About the Item

JOHNSON’S HOUSEHOLD BOOK OF NATURE Craig Hugh, Editor Henry J. Johnson, Publisher New York, 1880 64 Chromolithographs 7” x 10” Unframed “…full & interesting descriptions of the Animal Kingdom based on the writings of the Eminent Naturalists Audubon, Wallace, Brehm, Wood, and others.” With this descriptive paragraph, Henry J. Johnson set out to publicize this encyclopedic work on animals. Modest in size and complete in one volume, this book on natural history was aimed at the popular audience of its day. The world had opened its doors to exploration and specimens from every continent filled the halls of castles and museums. Kangaroos, wallabies, tigers and giraffes were all known to the average school-aged child. Parents were learning the value of bookshelves filled with the latest literature on the wonders of the world. Hugh Craig, editor, combined brief commentary from well-known naturalists with brightly colored chromolithographs often based on that specific naturalist’s illustrations. Most easily recognizable are the Audubon animals from The Quadrupeds of North America. Thus, even those not privy to more expensive subscriptions could enjoy the accomplishment of America’s greatest illustrator of birds and animals. The result is a delightful collection of animals from around the world set in the distinctive backgrounds of their natural environment.

ARCHIV FUR ORNAMENTALE KUNST. M. Gropius, L. Lohde, P. Lehfeldt. Chromolithograph. Berlin, 1870. 13” x 19” Unframed. A fine German work by, the illustrations are of classical and neo-classical decorative designs. The acanthus leaf, Greco-Roman busts, mythical animals and ornamental relief show the preferred style of architectural ornament over the centuries and from country to country. A trick of the lithographer was to use the occasional solid ground to give better dimension to the plate. Measuring 19” x 13”, many designs include a scale to show actual size. Only two of the 72 illustrations were printed in full color, another pair in sepia tones, and six in burnt orange and black to show typical Etruscan designs. Several have toned backgrounds. It has been the fashion to apply hand coloring to black and white engravings and lithographs for centuries. The superb condition can be attributed to the individual paper guards placed between each plate. Many of the pieces illustrated are in museums; i.e. a Greek painted portrait medallion is preserved in the Classical Museum...

Highly regarded as the founder of scientific ornithology in Europe, Naumann has often been referred to as the ‘Father of Ornithology”. His presentation shows the birds in their natural settings. Naumann employed renowned bird artists of his time such as. Keulemans, Kleinschmidt, Geisler, Von Riesenthal, De Maes and Goering. The resulting tome included over 400 plates. So popular was this work that it enjoyed a second printing less than 20 years later. Its relevancy was undisputed. Naturgeschicte der Land- Und Wasser- Vogel Des Nordlichen Deutschlands un Angranaender Lander, Naumann the elder’s work, was first published in 1795-1817. Naturgeschichte der Vogel Mitteleuropas, or Natural History of Central European Birds, was and published in various formats between 1797 and 1817. Buchanan and Fisher describe this later second edition as the ". . . most scholarly and complete ornithological text book of its time (perhaps of any time)." Reference: Fine Bird Books (1700-1900).
