About the Item

Joanna Irvin Greenwich Window 1 Etching A/P Image: 15 x 10 Mount 27.0 x 22.0 cm Joanna Irvin - Joanna was born in Aberdeen and spent her childhood in Scotland and Ireland. She studied painting in Aberdeen at Gray’s School of Art, and printmaking at Morley College in London. For some years after graduating, oil painting – mostly portraiture– was her speciality, but nowadays she enjoys painting seascapes and other outdoor subjects in gouache and watercolour. Her work as a printmaker is mainly landscape. She is always inspired by water, especially the sea. Other favoured subjects include islands, beaches, rocks and mountains, mainly in Scotland and the Hebrides, but also Tuscany and Nepal. Her etching and aquatint techniques are skillfully used to capture the colour and light of these landscape subjects.

  • ‘Solstice Sun’
    Located in Bournemouth, Dorset
DAVIES, Peter (b.1953) ‘Solstice Sun’ 2019 Linocut on paper 15.0 x 10.0 cm (6 x 4 in.) Artists Statement Since starting to paint in 1981 my mainly plein aire landscapes have used a mechanical, rather than lyrical or painterly, approach. This probably puts my observational paint – by – numbers pictures at a creative and expressive disadvantage. But it doers prove conducive to a structural or compositional kind of drawing over which are applied layers of oil paint to deliver idiosyncratic textural and atmospheric effects. Furthermore, a Ben Nicholson – inspired dichotomy between foreground rooftops or architecture and a naturalistic marine or landscape background makes a chosen plastic and temperamental approach apt. So when in 2004 I was inspired by the much loved master relief printmaker John Liddell 1925-2005) to try my hand at linocut I found a process ideally suited to my mechanical bent it has been a love affair ever since. The workshop he founded in 1991 Poole Printmakers is a safe haven, an intimate co-operative near Poole Quay, and some of the most scenic terrain in Britain. It is also an area where my art career started in 1978 and inspired my early book Art in Poole and Dorset, published by Poole Historical Trust, 1987. Many blissful and absorbing hours over the last 13 years have yielded a large body of linocut prints in which I exercise those mechanical and reproductive qualities proper to the medium. • Interiors IV : Hotel Paradise Cafe
    By Peter Milton
    Located in New York, NY
“INTERIORS IV : HOTEL PARADISE” Contemporary artist Peter Milton created this etching and engraving in 1987. The printed Image size is 24 x 35.50 inches and the paper size is 30.75 x 41.75 inches. This impression is signed, dated, and titled in pencil, and inscribed “84/175” – the 84th impression of an edition of 175 pieces. “I do love to draw. I feel that I am being granted membership in the Brotherhood of Merlin, conjuring forth some apparition. As a drawing develops, I sense a vague presence coming more and more into focus, something in a white fog emerging and becoming increasingly palpable.” – P. Milton, “The primacy of touch. The Drawings of Peter Milton” “Working in layers, Milton begins with drawings based on people and places, with nods to Western art history and culture. He is a master of the appropriated image, a term that may conjure Andy Warhol and his Pop Art comrades. But Milton steps further back in history, avoiding the Pop sense of cool advertising and popular culture references. Instead, a broader cultural past is tapped through historical photographs of key players, architecture, and locales, which he reinvents by hand. He adds content drawn from his life as an avid reader – always with multiple possible interpretations – thus incorporating deeper meaning in his cinematic worlds. Elements of Greek mythology, classical music, art history, and history coalesce in his images, which embrace the messiness, sorrow, and elation that is life. One is hard-pressed to imagine a more erudite, skilled, passionate, and cheeky soul.” – T. L. Johnson and A. Shafer Peter Milton was born in Pennsylvania in 1930. He studied for two years at the Virginia Military Institute...

Hans Schleger 'Zero' (1898-1976) London Transport Coach Stop Poster Screenprint poster c. 1970 16x17.8 cm Printed for London Transport These posters were designed to be used as temporary stops when the usual stop required amendment for instance owing to road works or similar events. Printed on paper they were designed to be posted up at the alternative site, possibly over a different sort of stop (bus stop, coach stop, request stop, etc.). Working with Edward Johnson's special typeface created for London Transport, Hans Schleger - or Zero as he signed himself - adopted the famous roundel used by London Underground for use at Bus Stops. Born in Germany, Schleger was an influential graphic designer. After serving during the First World War, he studied at the Berlin Kunstgewerbeschule, being taught by Emil Orlik. The same year Walter Gropius founded the Bauhaus at Weimar and Schleger learned the same principles of breaking down the barriers between architecture, design, fine art and craft. A firm believer in the Bauhaus principles of simplicity in design and reduction to essentials, these may be seen in the clean lines of the roundel. In 1924 he moved to New York, applying Modernism to American advertising, and then returned to Berlin in 1929 working for the British advertising agency Crawfords, where he met Edward McKnight Kauffer who introduced him to Jack Beddington the head of advertising at Shell Mex...
