TOM WESSELMANN (1931- 2004) Considered one of the major artists of New York Pop Art, along with Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol. As a an early founding member of New York's landmark Judson Gallery, he exhibited his work along side then-unknown artists Robert Rauschenberg and Claes Oldenburg. He rejected the emotive style of Abstract Expressionism in favor of iconic representations of figurative imagery. In that effort, he constructed collages and assemblages combining commonplace objects and advertising ephemera in order to create powerful recognizable imagery of nudes, still life's, and landscapes.
