Silence=Death Collective
Let the Record Show

1987

About the Item

Offset poster Text at bottom reads: “©1987 THE SILENCE = DEATH PROJECT. Used by permission by ACT UP, The AIDS Coalition To Unleash Power, 135 West 29th St., #10, NYC 10001” This artwork is offered by ClampArt, located in New York City. In July 1987, William Olander (1950-1989), an ACTUP member and curator of the New Museum in New York City, invited ACTUP to make an installation in “…the window by the museum entrance on Broadway”. A neon SILENCE=DEATH symbol crowned the display, with a pink triangle below. The pink triangle was appropriated from the Nazi marker for gay men imprisoned at death camps furthering the analogy between the AIDS crisis and the Holocaust. The neon piece became part of the New Museum’s permanent collection, and the SILENCE = DEATH graphic was widely disseminated through T-shirts, wheat-pastes, and other printed ephemera. The graphic was a reaction to an 1985 editorial in The New York Times written by William F. Buckley, as well as the silence by the Reagan government. Entitled “Let the Record Show” the work featured cardboard silhouettes of six public figures—televangelist Jerry Falwell, columnist William F. Buckley Jr., US Senator Jesse Helms, Cory Servaas of the Presidential AIDS Commission, an anonymous surgeon, and the Gipper, President Ronald Reagan—posited as AIDS criminals and set against a mural-sized photograph of the Nuremberg trials. Concrete slabs positioned under each figure offered evidence of their crimes, from misrepresentations of AIDS to ignoring the issue altogether as in the case of Reagan’s notorious public silence, in the form of personal quotes. One reacted, for example, to a 1986 editorial in The New York Times by notorious arch-conservative William Buckley, who proposed that all persons with AIDS “…should be tattooed in the upper forearm, to protect common-needle users, and on the buttocks, to protect the victimization of other homosexuals.”

  • Untitled (Between C & D)
    By David Wojnarowicz
    Located in New York, NY
    In this offset poster, printed in collaboration with the Lower East Side literary magazine, "Between C & D," David Wojnarowicz confronts and denounces violence against members of the LGBT community. Cynthia Carr discusses this poster in her biography, "Fire in the Belly: The Life and Times of David Wojnarowicz." She relates the episode of when Wojnarowicz became estranged from collaborator Marion Scemama during the production of this piece and inked out her name on the copies of the poster in his possession. This is a copy from his estate. Between C & D (1983–1990) was a Lower East Side quarterly literary magazine edited by Joel Rose and Carherine Texier. Though a geographical reference to the blocks between Avenue C and Avenue D in New York City's East Village neighborhood, “Between C & D” has also been suggested to mean “between coke and dope,” giving an indication of the publication's transgressive content and ethos. The magazine's actual tagline was “Sex. Drugs. Danger. Violence. Computers.” It was printed on fanfold computer paper, sold in a plastic bag, and featured original artwork on each binding. Contributors included Kathy Acker, Dennis Cooper, Gary Indiana, Tama Janowitz...

  • End of the USA
    By Jenny Holzer
    Located in Toronto, Ontario
    Jenny Holzer is one of the most important and original artists of the 20th century. Her body of work, with an emphasis on text, is consistently provocative and occasionally frightening, manipulating the language of both pop culture and government slogan to produce commentary on global issues notably power structures and warfare. Holzer's iconic "Inflammatory Essays", produced between 1979 and 1982, were first pasted on walls throughout heavily populated metro areas including New York and other cities. Composed of anonymous statements, printed on friendly or calm colored papers, the statements were influenced by writings of major political figures such as Emma Goldman...

  • Wings over America Air Corps US Army
    Located in Spokane, WA
    Original poster: Wings Over America. Artist: Tom Woodburn. Archival linen backed in very good condition. Original fold marks touched up during linen backing. Ready to frame. (all U. S. Government World War II timeframe posters were folded and mailed out across the nation.). These original fold marks are not considered a flaw. The image on most monitors should render the true color of this poster with the ivory borders, brown feathers of the eagle, the red-orange of the text, and the center of the stars. The artwork was done in 1939 but the poster was officially printed in 1941. You can sense the speed of the aircraft in this image with the small white trails ¬¬¬¬off the wings and the contrast in size of the eagle in size to the planes. Tom Woodburn. A Texan who had studied art and architecture, Tom Woodburn was commissioned in the Infantry a month after the U. S. entered World War I. He hopes it will never have to enter World War II. He created the recruiting posters before the start of World War II and his incredible designs were instrumental in helping encourage the enlistment of soldiers making the U.S. better prepared.
