Owen Weiri (also Wiiri)
Owen Weiri (also Wiiri), The Coal Miner

1949

About the Item

Owen Weiri (also Wiiri, 1916-1974) was a Finnish-American who served in the Spanish Civil War and then, during World War ll, in the American armed forces as a marine. Industrial subjects, and coal mining in particular, hold endless fascination for many and me in particular. The man shown here is so many things. Most importantly he has a job. After the Depression, and then the war, once again employment equalled dignity. But this man is world-weary. He is glancing away as though he knows it's a dirty and dangerous occupation from which few emerged unscathed. The space behind him is frightening void. Is he emerging from it into the daylight or escaping the gloom? It is signed, titled, and dated, in pencil.

Copper etching with aquatint The power of memory and how it recalls individuality begins in such basic experiences as the ability to link internal ideas to external manifestations of those ideas. Memories as simple as an old toy or a street can set off a chain reaction of thoughts that snowball into issues as broad as nationalism, identity politics or a body politic to name a few. Hector Ruiz’s works encompass the broad, complex and often painful world particular to the Arizona and neighboring Mexican landscape. United States and Mexican border...
