Daniel Arsham
Daniel Arsham x RIMOWA eroded attache case

2019

About the Item

Inspired by the iconic suitcase from the RIMOWA archives in Cologne, RIMOWA and contemporary artist Daniel Arsham have teamed up to bring the much-loved vintage suitcase up to date. Revisited in the form of an “eroded briefcase” in a numbered limited edition series, the sculpture is presented as an archival object, approved for gloves for handling works of art, and is contained in an edition contemporary of the vintage suitcase that inspired the work of art – a RIMOWA Classic briefcase. Daniel Arsham, one of America's hottest contemporary artists, incorporates a quasi-scientific approach into his sculpture, installation, and set design. His aesthetic style stems from his interest in documentation and architecture, as he walks the line between a romantic vision of archeology and science fiction by simultaneously adopting the language of the future and that of the past. Similar to his famous “Future Relic” series (2013–2018) where he imagines many everyday objects as archaeological finds from a futuristic, dystopian world, RIMOWA’s “eroded briefcase” appears to have been taken from the dirt and debris, such as dug up from an archaeological dig site. The only clue to the masquerade is the immaculate white color of the work which almost amplifies the strange nature of the object, coming from another world. Alongside similar works, the “eroded briefcase” joins the list of other iconic objects such as Polaroid cameras, cassette players and cell phones.
