Francesca Bernardini
Perpetual motion by Francesca Bernardini - Large marble sculpture, abstract

2010

About the Item

Perpetual motion is a unique Bardiglio marble and glaze sculpture by contemporary artist Francesca Bernardini, dimensions are 60 × 160 × 80 cm (23.6 × 63 × 31.5 in). The sculpture is signed and comes with a certificate of authenticity. The artist's debut work was the 2000 series Nests, Cocoons, Crysalis. The sculptures in this collection are enclosed structures that evoke private, secure spaces: nests stand in for the home and the family, while cocoons and chrysalises are secure enclosings where one grows and changes in total safety. The sculptor's need to defend those she loves as well as her desire for a family and motherhood gave birth to the series during a personal internal exploration. The smooth, rounded forms of Francesca Bernardini's marble sculptures are based on mental states, feelings, and individual experiences. The forms and volumes that give them shape are frequently influenced by the natural world and are rich in symbolism connected to enduring themes, such as individual growth, the value of interpersonal relationships, respect for nature, and the life cycle.

  • "Flying to the Inside", Contemporary, Ceramic, Sculpture, Geometric Patterning
    By Judith Ernst

Originally from the Northwest with a B.A. from Stanford University, I have painted, published illuminated books, and lived and traveled extensively in Asia. Now working primarily in ceramics, I draw images from the deep well of past experience, always starting from a strong “mind’s eye” vision. My ceramic pieces are as much about their inside as they are about their sculpted outside. Implied are the dichotomies between the inner and outer, between that which is hidden and that which is seen, between the esoteric and the exoteric, between the soul and the body. I continue to create “Metaphysical Pots” that feature water both inside and outside, becoming metaphorically both the Water of Life and the Infinite Ocean, symbolizing the continuous process between creation and transcendence. Other pieces include shapes that repeat in a pattern that follows the form of the vessel. It is a “bio-geometry” that leads the eye back to the inside...
