About the Item
Justin Peyser Inclusion 1 is a 47.2 x 27.5-inch steel and wood sculpture. The sculpture is conceived to hang on a wall. The composition plays on the linearity and lightness of the elements. Wooden round drums, attached to a steel rectangular frame through linear steel segments, are projected towards the center. The random pattern formed by the shooting wooden drums, creates a perception of rhythmic movement.
Peyser was graduated from Harvard's Department of Visual and Environmental Studies at a time when it was under the cultural influence of the Bauhaus. His teachers included Greek-American Sculptor Dimitri Hadzi. Peyser main medium is steel. His sculptures spring from his interest in the relationship between space and architecture as well as the issue of neglected urban areas and the reasons they were abandoned. Concepts of territory, inclusion and exclusion pervade through the work. His artwork assembles surfaces that have been battered, cut, reassembled in a continuum of space and time. The light caresses and penetrates the surfaces and restores their consistency. Surface extends in height and length; place, in contrast, is deep.
