Mary Shaffer
Southern Sunset, a glass and metal orange wall sculpture by Mary Shaffer

2011

About the Item

Shaffer was inspired by seeing sunsets reflecting in windows when she lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico to create this Window Series. Shaffer is a risk taker, as is apparent in the extremely thin sheet of hand-crafted sheet glass in this particular work, which she handled with great care as it melds with the metal framework. Annealing the work is especially dangerous, as the metal and glass cool down at different rates. Very easy to install, this luminous wall sculpture is also admired for its colorful shadow. Brackets are included. Mary Shaffer has worked primarily in glass since the 1970s. She was the only woman in the group of a founding artists of the American Studio Glass Movement. Shaffer invented a whole new way to work with and think about glass - a process she called "mid-air slumping." "The structural system I create allows the glass to move with fluidity and freedom you can't possibly envision or create with a mold," Shaffer explains. "Because I work with gravity, the strongest unknown force in the universe, I say I work with nature. I call this the 'female principle' in the Jungian sense; the idea of yielding and joining forces with nature, versus the 19th Century attitude of 'man over nature.' This is the fundamental philosophy behind my glass work." Shaffer has shown her work in over 60 museums worldwide, and her work is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Smithsonian in Washington DC, Grounds for Sculpture in New Jersey, and the Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto, Japan, among many others. She has also taught at Rhode Island School of Design, Wellesley College, and New York University.

  • "Cryptic Voyage" outdoor sculpture
    Located in Glen Ellen, CA
This surreal suspended sculpture in painted steel hangs from a wire to enliven any outdoor space. The large white mouth in the center blows bright pink birds into the air while a white figure seen in profile is jumping off a diving board on the other side. Quite a happy cacophony of forms in this most playful kinetic sculpture! (White clouds optional, but make for a delightful photo!) Jeff Glode Wise makes wildly exuberant sculptures. He utilizes such diverse materials as steel, wood, stone, glass, concrete, bronze, and gold -- whichever is the most appropriate for the aesthetic and functional purposes at hand. He then transforms these materials through various techniques and crafts honed for years through his practice of jewelry making: welding, carving, casting, meticulous fitting, plating, etc. Art and the making of objects have defined Jeff Wise...

  • Probability Deep Blue 4 - elegant, curved, abstract, glass, wall sculpture
    By John Paul Robinson
    Located in Bloomfield, ON
John Paul Robinson creates original contemporary wall sculptures from coloured glass that are filled with light. This piece features elegant arched deep blue tubes of glass that are polished to a smooth finish and overlap one another to create a dynamic composition. The Canadian artist often explores themes related to how the world works. This is one of a series intended to represent the dual nature of light as both a particle and a wave. In physics, the wave nature of light is referred to as a "probability wave". “The thickness of the glass and curvature of the lens conspire to create their own optical effect. As your gaze moves across the piece it causes the small grains of coloured glass to shift just a bit. Starry Starry Night...
