About the Item

Edition of 3 + 2 AP. Brushed bronze sculpture with a stone base. Deverne is a visual artist born in 1927 and died in 2012. The double teaching of his training he receives at the Decorative Arts and Fine Arts of Paris in the 50s, makes him master a number of techniques, all subject to the discipline of drawing. He began his career as a graphic designer working with renowned poster artist Jean Carlu. Today, Deverne is first and foremost known for his monumental works (Mosaic of the Defense District in Paris, giant sculptures in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, etc.) that weave a link between architecture and the visual arts. His work has been the subject of numerous exhibitions and retrospectives (Musée Carnavalet in 2007, Grand Palais in 1989, Center Pompidou in 1978, etc.). Whether he works with metal for his sculptures, mosaic, or paper collage, he thinks architectural space, what Le Corbusier called the unspeakable space. Kinetic art is for him an important source of inspiration, based on the illusion of optics, on the virtual movement of the work in the eye of the beholder. He is also inspired by constructivism, which is also geometric. He prefers to speak of "art built", a term that refers to an architectural dimension. These structures come to life gradually by playing with shadow and light in a studied flow. Nothing is closed, suspended or stopped, or left to chance, but arranged patiently. When color intervenes and dresses collages, we find the same sense of space as in its monumental structures, the same tension of opposites, the same almost obsessive recurrence of elements adjusted according to their chromatic properties. Deverne's approach never stops talking to the space around us.
