About the Item

Archival pigment on wooden panel, edition of 12 Sumit Mehndiratta is an Indian artist born in 1986 who lives & works in New Delhi, India. He has pursued Master of Science in International Fashion Marketing from Manchester Metropolitan University in UK. The artist enjoys making artworks from different mediums that please the mind and soul of the individual. Sumit works aren't restricted to one style or medium of work. His works range from generic mediums such as canvas and paper to experimental mediums like digital art, mixed media and wall sculptures. Sumit claims to have been experimental since childhood. Be it drawing, sketching, painting or photography, he always liked to do something no one has ever thought of, by adding his signature element to the task. To achieve this, Sumit creates his own painting tools to go with the techniques he thinks of. He also believes in impulsive acts of making art and its surprising results. Sumit also focuses on giving back to nature from what he earns as an artist. On collecting Sumit Mehndiratta's artworks, buyers help him contribute 10% of his earnings to an Animal Welfare organisation based in India called AnimalAidUnlimitedwho treats, shelters and helps in adoption of injured animals from the city.

The idea behind the picture is to use recycled materials. There are three materials, aluminium, canvas and wood. I like the simplicity and the color, I ll personally like it as it is.

Artist's Statement: "Around 30 years ago, not long after I had started painting seriously, I was at a one-man exhibition of the great Brice Marden at the Fort Worth Museum of Modern Art when I visited the annex to get a cocktail. There was one other guy at the small bar table in an otherwise empty room, waiting for his coffee to be handed to him. He turned and dumped half of it down my front. I immediately recognized him as none other than Brice Marden. He apologized profusely, but I stopped him and said: 'No problem: how often is it that Brice Marden dumps coffee on your pants? They're worth more now.' We both had a good laugh. At any rate - I was certainly channeling his early work when I began work on this series. They are made with oil and beeswax on wood panels. While they look Minimalist at first glance, there are subtle shifts in color and texture that distinguish them from hard-edged abstraction. For me, it has always been about the surface, and the materials. Wax has a character unlike anything else. I use wax both hot (encaustic) and in a cold mixture with turpentine, blended with oil. The complementary underpainting, setting the stage for the wax and oil later...
