About the Item

"The most Greek of all the gods, in art the ideal type of young, but not immature, manly beauty. A master musician, archer, healer, and prophet, he is the god of light and the god of truth. The rugged, strong, masculinity of the stone - its unique character - suggested Apollo to me." - Anita Huffington Quote from the monograph "Anita Huffington," Photographs by David Finn with Introduction by Townsend Wolfe and Essay by Amei Wallach, (New York, New York: Ruder Finn Press, 2007.) "Apollo" is illustrated on pages 144-145. Dimensions including the stone base are 14 3/8 x 5 11/16 x 5 1/8 inches. This bronze is edition 5/9

    By Caroline Lloyd
    Located in Santa Cruz, CA
Signed 'Lloyd' for Caroline Lloyd (American, 1875-1945) and created circa 1935. Base impressed with foundry stamp, 'C. Valsuani Cire Perdue', for Claude Valsuani Fonderie, Paris. Please note: Video has not been color corrected; for correct color, refer to photographs. Born in Indiana, Caroline Lloyd first studied at the Convent of Notre Dame in Milwaukee. After raising a family, she moved to Paris where she studied under Robert Wierick at the Ecole des Arts Appliqué à l’Industrie and, subsequently, at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Montparnasse. In France, Lloyd quickly achieved both commercial and critical success and was made welcome in Modernist artistic circles. She exhibited widely, including at the Salon D'Automne, the Salon des Tuileries and the Salon des Beaux Arts among other Ateliers and galleries. At the Paris International Exposition of 1937, Lloyd was awarded a medal and her exhibited work was purchased by the French government for the permanent collection of the Jeu de Paume...

  • Solid Bronze 20th Century Nude Ballet Dancer 'Stepping Stones' by Benson Landes
    By Benson Landes
    Located in Shrewsbury, Shropshire
'Stepping Stones' by Benson Landes is a Solid Bronze 20th Century Nude Ballet Dancer - she is so light on her feet and beautifully elegant. For Benson Landes, sculpture was most definitely a passion. His oeuvre of cast bronzes is populated with ‘off duty’ ballet dancers, rather wistful women, often caught in moments of solitary repose. Such an obvious appreciation of the grace and elegance of the female form was, no doubt, heightened by 25 years spent in the couture business, which Benson entered at the age of 14. The sculptor admitted that his time as an apprentice at his father’s clothing...
