About the Item
Cristina Córdova was born in Boston Mass.in 1976. Her parents were Puerto Ricans completing their studies in Medicine at Harvard University. They returned to Puerto Rico when she was 6 months old. She holds a Masters degree from the NY State College of Ceramics at Alfred University and a B.A., magna cum laude from the Colegio de Agricultura y Artes Mecanicas in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. Her work is in the collections of the Renwick Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art in Puerto Rico, the Fuller Craft Museum, The Mint Museum of Craft and Design – to name a few.
The human figure is key to her work which has been described as "a compelling strain of magical realism ... laden with ideas of creation, crucifixion and the difficult nature of existence.” She is interested in the internal struggle of her characters and creates symbolic representations of that struggle, constantly challenging herself to extend the boundaries of what can be done in the clay medium, often incorporating other materials as well.
Lobo is a wall sculpture made of ceramic, resin and metal.

- Large Animal Wall Sculpture: 'Wormhole'By Gin StoneLocated in New York, NY'I am a multidisciplinary artist with a focus on ecofeminism using fiber and mixed media constructions. My materials include hand-dyed commercially fished line and ghost gear, recycled and antique textiles, fabric printed with cyanotype emulsions and found objects. I change the existing surface of recognizable animals by creating a veneer of unexpected color and imagery. This forces the viewer to consider the shape more carefully by visually exploring its new topography. The creation process can be likened to painting with fiber (that has been tinted with hand-mixed dyes) on a three-dimensional canvas. Intense work is spent creating the eyes and ears to convey the emotion of each animal. I look to the work of Joan Mitchell and The Quilters of Gee’s Bend as inspiration for pattern and color, as well as charts, iconography, and satellite imaging.' -Gin Stone...Category
