About the Item
Antique Bronze Dog Portrait of a Terrier
Pierre-Albert Laplanche (French, 1826-1873)
Signed in script to base "Laplanche"
Stamped "E.V 3753"
8 x 2.75 x 8 1/4 inches
This is a superb and sensitive depiction of an attentive dog standing with its ears pricked, head turned and eyes deeply focused on the viewer. The patina is a light- brown finish and the details are crisp and very fine. The dog displays an exceptionally kind face and looks good from all angles. It’s a very sweet and compelling portrayal of a “family dog.”
Pierre-Albert Laplanche was born in 1826 in Lyons and was a student of Pierre-Louis Rouillard. Additionally, Laplanche exhibited at the Paris Salons and numerous examples of his sculptures can be found in the Musee des Beaux-Arts in Reims, France.
Please see “Animals in Bronze” by Christopher Payne, Antique Collectors Club, 1986, p. 201 for a comparable example.
