About the Item
This delightful bronze sculpture of a walking baby elephant is highly textured and finished with an elegant sepia patina. Canadian sculptor Richard Tosczak begins his pieces with rapid pen and ink studies that evolve into dynamic three-dimensional figurative works cast in bronze. This is number 3 in an edition of 8.
“I have always liked sculptures of Ganesh (elephant-headed Hindu god of beginnings) and have thought about making images of baby elephants for years. The baby elephant, for me, symbolizes creativity and the importance of pursuing one’s truest life.” Richard Tosczak
Born in Belgium, Richard Tosczak studied philosophy and sculpture at the University of Alberta. At that time, Tosczak began working in steel and was influenced by a number of his professors who appreciated the work of a British abstract sculptor, Sir Anthony Caro considered one of the greatest sculptors of his generation. Further studies were pursued in France with another internationally acclaimed classic sculptor, Martine Vaugel. Tosczak has exhibited in Canada, Brazil and Europe. His work is held in private, public and corporate collections in Canada.

Richard Tosczak
Richard Tosczak (b. 1966, Belgium) studied philosophy and sculpture at the University of Alberta. Tosczak’s bronze sculptures are marked by a dynamic formalism that is based on spontaneous pen and ink drawings. “The figurative works of the last few years are overtly anonymous and convey an intense introspection. Even those figures, inspired by dynamic activities such as dance and contact improvisation, give the impression they are turning inward into themselves. I believe this reflects and parallels my personal experience and possibly my growth as an artist.” Richard Tosczak Tosczak has exhibited in Canada, Brazil, Spain and France and was the only Canadian selected for the 2013 Figurative exhibition in Barcelona. His work is in corporate, private and public collections including the University of Alberta Collections, the City of Edmonton, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and the University of Calgary.
