About the Item

The small bronze depicts a small seated faun, immortalized while playing a wind instrument as can be clearly seen by the puffy cheeks. is signed at the base R. Castagnino and is from a ceramic prototype modeled in a manufactory in Albissola, Liguria. The artist first exhibited it at his solo show in the Pesaro Gallery in 1933. Rodolfo Castagnino is a Genoese artist active in the first half of the 20th century, who participated in the most important exhibitions of the time (e.g.: Promotrice di Genova, Biennale di Venezia, Sindacale di Firenze, Quadriennale di Roma). A prolific sculptor with all sorts of materials (wood, terracotta, plaster, bronze, marble), he is characterized by a style that is very measured and composed in definition, mellowed by a quiet, relaxed expressiveness, very often directed toward idyllic themes.
