Phantom Zella (The Shadow Phantom)

2014

About the Item

The Shadow Phantom. The Egyptians believed that a person’s shadow was an important element of that person as it is formed by the sun; a sacred symbol in their faith. An individual’s shadow takes it value from the light and may even have thought to hold a portion of their soul. In some context it could be believed that a shadow also represented an idea of the individuals mortality and was both a part of its owner as well as being separate from it. Cast at Venturi Atre Bologna the 24k gold gilding was added by Boky Hackel-Ward. The method of bronze casting used to create this unique type of lace surface requires two or three attempts in order to produce the desired results. The different pieces that make up this sculpture were recreated and cast two separate times before all the elements were perfectly formed and acceptable to the artist. Bronze & 24 Karat Gold Leaf Unique Piece 44.8 x 7.5 x 14.2 inches From the artist: "In the Spirit collection, the Phantoms I create continue the exploration of 'body and soul' as my artwork expands into 'an interior' that is filled with myriad of ideas. These concern our changing intellect and are formed as a result of our expanding consciousness, our spiritual inclinations and evolving sense of soul. This work emphasizes how our awareness and connection to our internal selves is beginning to have an affect on the world. We are understanding a great deal more about ourselves and continue to develop our various intelligences; emotional, inter and intra personal, as well as pluralistic and spiritual. I think that this is where our cultures and societies will meet with the integration of science, religion, imagination and consciousness. This is the internal landscape of which I speak in this work." ARTIST STATEMENT: "The beauty, grace and symmetry of traditional figurative sculpture has always called to me. It is my school and my obsession. My language is the figure and I feel the need to comment on the human condition, sometimes distorted by demons, and other times enchanted by all that is pure within us. I have renewed my relationship to the human form. It has undergone a metamorphosis from silent conformity, where the rules and proportions are tantamount to a partial figure where the human condition becomes of primary importance. I want to stretch the canons of classical realism by giving beauty another voice that challenges socio-political norms. I speak of spirit and courage, of heritage and of imperishable strength. Today I challenge the traditional figure, creating a characterization of the Spirit; a metaphor to our inner world that might encourage us to seek a deeper understanding of ourselves. Consciousness, as a philosophical concept, can lead us many places, from the empirical world of the cognitive sciences to a theoretical one, where psychology attempts to provide the answers. It is my intention to reach into the 21st. century using sculpture to transcend disciplinary boundaries between the physical bodies in bronze and the self-knowledge and understanding of the ethereal realm that is our internal landscape." ~ Blake Ward Canadian born sculptor Blake Ward has exhibited his works internationally. In addition, he has numerous public installations in the principality of Monaco, where he currently resides, including in Princess Grace’s Rose Garden. His work is also in the private collections of Prince Albert of Monaco, Herb Alpert, Gerry Moss among many other collectors throughout the world.
