About the Item

NICK KNIGHT (*1958, Great Britain) Porcelain Kate 2013 Nymphenburger hard porcelain in white bisque Sculpture 36,6 x 61 x 15 cm (14 3/8 x 24 x 5 7/8 in.) Edition of 25; Ed. no. 6/25 Nick Knight is among the world’s most influential and visionary photographers. He has worked on a range of often controversial issues during his career – from racism, disability, ageism, and more recently fat-ism. He continually challenges conventional ideals of beauty. The photographer Nick Knight has been portraying international supermodel Kate Moss for more than two decades. As one of the most photographed women in the world who has been accompanied by Knight for many years, Moss serves as the subject of his work. In cooperation with the Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg, the world famous photographer has eternalised a three-dimensional portrait of the Briton in biscuit porcelain for the first time. The figurine developed in the master workshops of Nymphenburg in 2014 is reminiscent of Christian iconography. Attributes such as the filigree crown of thorns and the voluminous loincloth make reference to religious relics. Spreading wings like those of an angel enhance the transcendental appearance. In this way, the limited art edition from Nick Knight follows in the footsteps of the Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg by creating traditional sacred representations using characteristic bonds - at the same time, however, the "Kate Moss" composition should be understood as a separate piece independent of fixed interpretation. Knight depicts Kate Moss as an intact, iconic beauty who boasts classic, timeless elegance. The exact image of her beauty unfolds thanks to the wealth of detail in delicate white biscuit porcelain. The artist achieves nearly photo-realistic effects and allows his signature style to transcend an artistic medium outside of his range. Knight conveys his sensibilities from the two-dimensional realm in a three-dimensional space to create a 'photographic sculpture.' Transforming the model three-dimensionally without a loss of photographic imagery precision presented a particular challenge for the experts at Nymphenburg. Due to the expansive wingspan, the highly complex burning process was adapted and a special kind of bedding was made from a heat-resistant cotton wool for the body. This particular product development required cooperating with Aerospace Engineering specialists based on its use of lightweight materials that could withstand extreme temperatures. Nymphenburg porcelain was discovered as a material for religious figures early on - the white porcelain gives the figures transcendent character. Mainly as courtly commissions arose, these figures came to include the most outstanding artistic designs from Nymphenburg. In particular, artwork by Franz Anton Bustelli and sculptures by Franz Ignaz Günther fathered extraordinary skill in composition and surface treatment. Even today, they are made according to the original Rococo template in Nymphenburg as an unlimited edition from the 18th century. Knight’s work has been exhibited at institutions such as the Victoria & Albert Museum, Saatchi Gallery, The Photographers’ Gallery, the Hayward Gallery and recently the Tate Modern. Knight has also turned his hand to directing music videos - Pagean Poetry by Björk in 2001 being his first and, most recently, Kanye West’s Bound 2. He directed the video for Lady Gaga’s hit single Born This Way in 2011. Both the song and the video aimed to empower and show solidarity within minority groups, a common theme in Knight’s work. – Sculpture, Kate Moss, Model, Fashion, Porcelain, Angel, Wings

Michael WOLF (1954 – 2019, Germany) back door 48, 2003 Archival Pigment Print on Hahnemuehle art rag paper 40.6 x 50.8 cm (16 x 20 in.) Edition of 9, plus 2 AP; Ed. no. 2/9 Michael Wolf was born in 1954 in Munich, Germany. He worked and lived in Paris and Hong Kong where he died in April 2019. The focus of Michael Wolf’s work is life in mega-cities. His projects document both the architecture and the vernacular culture of metropolises. Born in Munich, Wolf grew up in Canada, Europe, and the United States, studying at UC Berkeley and at the Folkwang School with Otto Steinert in Essen, Germany. He moved to Hong Kong in 1994, where he worked for eight years as a contract photographer for Stern magazine. Since 2003, Wolf has been focusing on his own projects, publishing over thirty books of his work. His work is held in many permanent collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Brooklyn Museum, the San Jose Museum of Art in California, the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, the Museum Folkwang in Essen, the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, and M+ in Hong Kong. back door: The dark back alleys that crisscross the city are home to objects that, at first glance, seem to be discarded—the random detritus of the man-made world. Under the scrutiny of Michael Wolf's photographic eye, these objects become fascinating installation pieces, while the abstract patterns of the buildings reveal the beauty and order that underlie the apparent chaos of the city. Thought-provoking texts by Kenneth Baker and Douglas Young explore the choices that people make of lifestyle, form, function, identity, and design, as well as the notion of Hong Kong as a brand. – Art, Cityscape, Architecture, City, Michael Wolf, Street Photography, Colour Photography, Hong Kong, Pink dog...
