About the Item
Sculpted in walnut wood
In Germany the use of walnut was quite rare, in some cities in Northern Germany such as Lüneberg and Hamburg the use of walnut was allowed by gild regulations)
We like to thank Michael Rief of the Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum in Aachen, Germay, for his help.
Saint Anne was the mother of Mary, the wife of Joachim and the maternal grandmother of Jesus. St. Anne Trinity was a type of iconography depicting the 3 geerations of Saint Anne, Mary and the child Jesus. Emphasizing the humanity of Jesus, it drew on on the earlier conventions of the the Seat of Wisdom, and was popular in Northern Germany in the 1500s.
Saint Anne is patroness of unmarried women, housewives, women in labor or who want to be pregnant, grandmothers, mothers and educators. She is also a patroness of horseback riders, cabinet-makers and miners. As the mother of Mary, this devotion to Saint Anne as the patron of miners arises from the medieval comparison between Mary and Christ and the precious metals silver and gold.

- Portrait of a child holding peaches - Jacob Gerritsz. Cuyp (1594-1652)Located in Gent, BEOil on panel Portrait of a child holding peaches, accompanied by a dog. We are grateful to Fred Meijer for confirming the attribution on the basis of high-resolution photographs. The present portrayal of a silk-robed child, attended by a pedigree puppy and holding a sprig of expensive, exotic fruit, exudes the burgeoning wealth of the mid-17th century Dutch Republic, and is characteristic of the accomplished hand of Jacob Gerritsz. Cuyp. The sex of the present child is difficult to determine with certainty, as young boys also were attired in dresses at this time, but the silk bonnet...Category
