This review was founded in 1897 in the continuity of the review Les Beaux-Arts published between 1861 and 1865; Jules Comte, the founder, entitled his first issue Les Beaux-Arts - Revue nouvelle then changed the title to La Revue de l'art ancien et moderne. Jules Comte directed the review until his death in 1912. Raymond Woog took over , who was provisional director until the start of the war in July 1914. In 1919, André Dezarrois took over this review and was its director until December 1937, date of last issue (published in January 1938). In the meantime, it publishes the Bulletin of ancient and modern art, which has gained a certain notoriety in the community. Biography: Tony Minartz, pseudonym of Antoine Guillaume, born 8 April 1873 to Cannes and died in that city on 13 December 1944 Is a painter, draftsman , illustrator and engraver French. Painter autodidact , Tony Minartz starts to become known in 1896 by exhibiting paintings at the Salon of the National Society of Fine Arts , and then decorates the Pompadour theater of painted panels for fashion shows " Grand Guignol ", directed by L. Darthenay. In 1903, Henri Béraldi , with whom he worked, praised him in The Journal of ancient and modern art, writing that "it was thirty years ago," and he has received advice from Paul Renouard to be formed the technique of etching ; Béraldi adds that his favorite subjects are "Paris at night Paris at night, always." This serene Scottish Impressionist Edwardian coastal landscape is by noted Scottish artist Joseph Morris Henderson. It was painted circa 1910 and entitled Tiree verso. Tiree is the most westerly island in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland and one of the sunniest places in Scotland as well as midge fee due to the stiff breeze. Tiree is a very popular windsurfing venue and sometimes referred to as the Hawaii of the north. In most years, the Tiree World Classic surfing event is held here. The exact location of the painting is probably Vaul beach. Henderson has painted the view from one side of the large sweeping bay, so one looks across the beach to the opposite headland. His palette of light turquoise blues of the sea is just beautiful with the dramatic blusterly clouds above the sunny beach. The brushwork and impasto as just superb. This is a wonderful sunny Scottish coastal landscape and a superb example of Henderson's work. Signed lower right. Provenance. Signed and titled on T. & R. Annan & Sons, Ltd., Glasgow verso. Condition. Oil on canvas. Image size 24 inches by 18 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed in a frame that compliments the picture, 31 inches by 25 inches and also in excellent condition. Joseph Morris Henderson (1863-1936). Born in Glasgow, son of the artist Joseph Henderson by whom he was strongly influenced. Studied at Glasgow University and Glasgow School of Art. His style absorbed much from romantic Victorian realism and he dedicated himself to landscapes, seascapes and coastal scenes. He exhibited throughout his life primarily in Scotland. He was elected an Associate member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1928 and a full member in 1935. He exhibited there from 1890 for nearly fifty years, exhibited approximately 80 paintings.

"Bass Rock" is a 8.5 x 10.5 inches, oil on canvas, New England seascape by Pennsylvania Impressionist painter Giovanni Martino. The painting is signed "Giovanni Martino" in the lower right and titled on verso. The following is from Babette Martino, daughter of the artist: Giovanni Martino, National Academy of Design* member, was born on May 1, 1908 in Philadelphia PA where all seven brothers and one sister, Filomina, Frank, Antonio, Albert, Ernest, Giovanni, Edmond, and William became painters. They were under the tutelage of their eldest brother, Frank, who in the late 1920s, founded the first commercial art studio, Martino Studios, at 27 South 18th Street. Besides studying with his two eldest brothers, Giovanni also studied with Albert Jean Adolph at La France Institute, The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, The Graphic Sketch Club, and Spring Garden Institute in Philadelphia. In his mid teens he accompanied his two eldest brothers to New Hope searching for subjects to paint. In the 1930s, he also started to paint in Manayunk, a hilly mill town along the Schuylkill River. At this time he signed his paintings M. Giovanni. These colorful impressionistic works proceeded more thinly painted dramatically poetic street scenes of the mill town. These images developed into impasto laden oils in the 1960's with some of the paintings worked with a palette knife.
