1910 WW1 / Trench Watch, Extraordinarily Elgin Rare Caliber 201, 19 Jewel.
By Elgin
Located in Raleigh, NC
My shop was recently selected to supply vintage American watches for a premier movie starring some major actors and a world famous director. They were looking for authentic watches that would represent the time period from 1915-1926. I was selected because of my attention to detail and originality. It is a true story of events that took place during the 1920’s. What an honor for Vintage Watch Corner. I will share one Actor name, Robert Di Niro! A couple of watches currently listed were used in the filming.
1900 Elgin rare 19 jewel WW1 / Trench Watch. Wow, that is a mouthful. It describes a Trench Watch that has Elgins finest 0 size movement they made, it is a Picasso! A rare treat for you to consider, not many have survived over the last 124 years! Folks, this is a rare case and high caliber movement to survive. Don't wait. They are getting harder and harder to source, especially this movement. I was very lucky to have found it. in 8 years on Etsy, this is my second one.
The gear train is solid gold
The center wheel is solid gold
What an incredible offering. How about a Elgin Trench Watch with a military dial mated to a very rare trench watch case. These cases are getting harder and harder to find in extraordinary condition, Keep in mind many watch case from this era are close to 100 years young or more! To find a case this this, well let’s say I got very lucky. My good fortune is your gain.
This is a 0 size movement, they are getting much harder to find complete movements today, parts are easy, but not the movements.
History about Trench Watches
What is a “Trench Watch” ?
They were created using 3/0 and 0 size pocket watch movements and installing into watch cases that were meant to worn on the wrist. The watch movement companies would send their movements to independent jewelers, who in turn would select the cases, as described below. to house the movement.
So, the ordering process might go like this. A customer walks into a jeweler, with the help of the jeweler, the customer selects a 15 jeweled movement, then they go on to the case selection. The jeweler may recommend a higher end case manufactures, and then it is the style of case as many manufactures had several different styles. Once a complete selection was made, the jeweler put it together and delivered the watch. That is how many Trench Watches wrist watches were born in the early 1900's.
The movements often came from women pocket watches...

1918 Elgin Rare 6 Size 15J Trench Watch 100+ Years Young!
By Elgin
Located in Raleigh, NC
My shop was recently selected to supply vintage American watches for a premier movie starring some major actors and a world-famous director.
They were looking for authentic watches that would represent the time period from 1915-1926. I was selected because of my attention to detail and originality. It is a true story of events that took place during the 1920’s. What an honor for Vintage Watch Corner. I will share one Actor name, Robert Di Niro. This offering would of been perfect for the movie, it was not available at the time of the movies filming.
As of three weeks ago I was picked up for another movie that was originally made in 1936, they are doing a remake. I am supplying the watches for that movie.
Everyone once and awhile I get a treasure. This offering is originates from 1918, yes, that is correct 1918. There are several distinct characteristics that make this a real treasure to collect, keep reading if you are curious.
The watches size is the special attribute. It is very hard to find 6 size wrist watches from the WW1 / Trench watch era.
A genuine Bold Military dial that has been professionally refinished to its original status; this is the highlight of this listing. Luminous material has been applied. Don’t wait! Very hard to find an original WW1 Dial!
This offering is super hard to find. You could wait years before another one comes up for sale. Take close notes, save the pictures, it will be a long time before you see another one. NOTE:
To have a 6 size with a genuine WW1 / Trench watch dial is extraordinary. They are very difficult to find. This is the first one in about 10 years! For collectors who are reading this listing, they know how hard it is to find one in pristine condition. Let alone one with a higher caliber movement, 15 Jewels.
The case measures approximately 40MM, unheard of during this era! Very Very Rare! I have gently hand polished this case with Simichrome, it is a polish that does wonders for silver, nickel, oresilver, silveroid etc.
This watch was serviced November 2023. It runs beautifully as of this listing., It has a new crystal installed as well, I finished the watch with a 18MM black “Buffalo” leather open ended Trench Watch band with a stainless-steel buckle to match the case
Please keep in mind the watches that are 100+ years young do not keep time like modern watches. The do not have modern seals to acts a s a dust or moisture barrier.
Look at the pictures to compare against another watch. One has to know a bit of background to understand Trench / Wire Lug watches
History about Trench Watches
What is a “Trench Watch”?
They were created using 3/0 and 0 size and very rarely 6 size pocket watch movements and installing into watch cases that were meant to worn on the wrist. The watch movement companies would send their movements to independent jewelers, who in turn would select the cases (as described below) to house the movement.
So, the ordering process might go like this. A customer walks into a jeweler, with the help of the jeweler, the customer selects a 15 jeweled movement, then they go on to the case selection.
The jeweler may recommend a higher end case manufactures like Depollier, Philadelphia, Fays etc and then it is the style of case as many manufactures had several different styles. Once a complete selection was made, the jeweler put it together and delivered the watch. That is how many Trench Watches (wrist watches) were born in the early 1900’s.
The movements often came from women pocket watches because the wristwatch as we know was just being discovered. It is not uncommon to see various movements used in different cases, with various years. Remember the wristwatch was just being developed.
They often have some of the following characteristics:
Fixed or Wire Lug, some rare style have Swing Lugs: No traditional spring bar attachment as found in today’s watches.
Case Material: Solid Gold / Sterling Silver {925} / Nickel / Silverode or Gold Filled were used. {This case lid snaps snug on the case. This is important to note as many cases were badly damaged by their owners over the past 100 years. This watch case has been taken care of throughout its 100 years, it is in remarkable shape}
*For more practical purposes, a special alloy was developed which went by several different names, such as, “Silveroid, Silverore, Silverode or Silverine. “Silveroid” appears to have become the standard name for this metal that consisted of 45% nickel, 54% copper and 1% manganese. This metal was fairly hard wearing and could withstand the rigors of everyday use, for instance on the Railroads.
Case Manufactures: There were many case manufacturers that made cases for Trench Watches. Some of the more well know were: Dennison (English Manufacturer) Illinois (not affiliated with the Illinois Watch Company) J Depollier and Sons, Wadsworth, Fahys, Philadelphia, Fortune and many more
WW1 was 1914 to 1918, that is the time frame of many Trench Watches.

1919 Elgin Hermetic Trench Watch. Bold Red 12, with a “Solid Nickel Case"
By Elgin
Located in Raleigh, NC
Thank you for stopping by. There are watch cases that are increasingly hard to source for my “Trench Watch” projects. They are the cases that are often referred as Trench Watch cases. While a Trench Watch case can be made from a variety of metals and styles, this was designed to take punishment. Extra thick fixed lugs, nickel for strength and durability.
This watch is just that. What you are looking at is a 1919 Elgin with the magical Bold Red 12 dial. They are hard to find. The movement does in fact dates to 1919, WW1 was winding down in 1918. This is a true survivor of this time period.
From an interest standpoint, this style is considered to be the blueprint for the modern wristwatch today. The “wristlet” watch was just being developed for our boys in service and it became more socially acceptable to wear them on the wrist.
The dial does has been refinished, I point this out for accuracy. It shows beautifully in pictures and on the wrist. . The dial is a “Bold Military” style, a signature look by itself! This case has been gently hand polished to highlight the luster of polished nickel.
Note of observation. This is a 3/0 size case, slightly smaller than the more common 0 size cases. This in itself makes this a real treasure to own. Think about this, 1919 it is now 2024, the watch is 105 years young
By definition, What is a “Trench Watch”
What are WW1 or Trench watches? They were created using 3/0 and 0 size pocket watch movements and installing into watch cases that were meant to worn on the wrist.
They often have some of the following characteristics:
Fixed or Wire Lug: No traditional spring bar attachment as found in today’s watches.
Case Material: It or often Solid Gold / Sterling Silver 925 / Silverode or Gold Filled.. The case lid snaps snug on the case. This is a Oresilver, similar as silverode, read below.
*For more practical purposes, a special alloy was developed which went by several different names, such as, "Silveroid, Silverore, Silverode or Silverine. "Silveroid" appears to have become the standard name for this metal that consisted of 45% nickel, 54% copper and 1% manganese. This metal was fairly hard wearing and could withstand the rigors of everyday use, for instance on the Railroads.
Case Manufactures: There were many case manufacturers that made cases for Trench Watches. Some of the more well know were: Fahys, Fortune, Depollier and Sons, Dennison Illinois not affiliated with the Illinois Watch Company Depollier and Sons, Wadsworth, Philadelphia and many more. I would venture to guess this case was manufactured by Wadsworth.
This style of watch represents the epitome of the WW1 / Trench Watch era of timepieces. To the bold military bright white and Red 12 enamel dial in amazing condition to the highly collectible Hermetic case.
The case has been gently hand polished. Look at the pictures and discover the bold heavy duty fixed bar lugs, another great design feature of this watch, Many WW1 watches...

1942 Lord Elgin Caliber 559 21 Jewels. Christmas 1943
By Elgin
Located in Raleigh, NC
Approximately 1942 model 4806A. 14 karat yellow gold filled “Lord Elgin” that has had a total restoration.
You know me, I have to give some history to you better understand what you are looking at. The better you are informed, the more comfortable you will feel
This is a caliber 559, 21 jewels. Look at the movement, it is so clean and none of the typical oxidation that usually creeps into movements that are 70+ years you. This is what has been completed with this watch
Complete movement tear down service
Dial was refinished back to original status
The case was hand polished to bring out the luster of gold filled
NOS crystal installed
The case was ultrasonically cleaned to remove years of grime
Genuine 14MM Alligator dark brown band (remember it is a Lord Elgin)
In 1910, the Elgin National Watch Company pioneered its first wristwatch, leading ahead of other
American watch companies. Elgin watches produced many of the self-winding wristwatch movements
such as 607 and 618 calibres (bumper wind), and 760 and 761 calibres (30 and 27 jewels).
Elgin watches also played a role in history during World War I and World War II. In WWI, the
manufacturing site workers taught repair techniques to hundreds of U.S. military soldiers. While in
WWII, Elgin began to craft timepieces and other watch parts for the military.
Lord Elgin Watches are often made with gold plated cases and leather straps. This collection consists of
classic dress watches for men, perfect for business and formal evening occasions.
These watches come in different shape cases: square, circular, and rectangular. The style of Lord Elgin
watch is very elegant and refined. Interestingly, no two models look similar to each other.
Since I was young I’ve been around watches of all kinds. Everything from a $20 Swiss army watch...

1928 Elgin E-1 Series, 15 Jewel, Rare Dial Offering
By Elgin
Located in Raleigh, NC
Thank you for dropping by. I have a sublime offering that is Art Deco through and through. Elgin, one of the prolific early American wrist watch manufacturers. The played a significant role during the early wristwatch era. This is just an example.
This is an incredible survivor from two generations ago. This 1928, one year before “The Great Depression” hung over the US like a dark angry cloud. This could be labeled a Streamline Moderne offering in 14 karat white gold filled. The case is in remarkable condition for being almost 100 years young.
Elgin “Model 621” men’s Streamline Moderne design wristwatch in 14K white gold fill, circa 1928.
Let me share with you what makes this such a coveted treasure to own, if you are on my sight, you like vintage watches. With bias I know I offer some of the best in the market today, don’t take my word, read my reviews.

1930's Elgin Sports Watch 15 Jewel Stainless Case, Stunning Dial
By Elgin

Welcome to Vintage Watch Corner. First a PSA (Public Service Announcement) Vintage Watch Corner was selected as the Vintage watch source to supply “period” watches (1918-1926) for a major motion picture. This picture is being filmed in Oklahoma as we speak. It is a validation of the authenticity of my restorations.
What a great looking Elgin. This watch is from the late 1930’s, It is Elgin’s answer to the “waterproof” watch. The crystal has a gasket between the case and crystal, the case back has a gasket between the movement retainer ring and the case back, that by the way threads on.
I love the oversized crown; it adds a distinguished look to a “functional watch. This watch was targeted for the outdoors person who wanted a watch that could withstand the elements, hence multiple gaskets and oversized crown.
I love the two tone dial. It has a golden minute...

Questions About Elgin Watches
- 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021Some Elgin watches can be worth as much as $5,000 because of their make, model and age. In most cases, though, Elgin watches sell in the $200-$500 range.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022No. The USA-based Elgin Watch Company sadly closed its doors in 1968. The rights to the Elgin name were purchased by MZ Berger Inc., which manufactures watches in China and distributes them outside of conventional watch shops. On 1stDibs, find a collection of authentic Elgin watches from some of the world’s top sellers.
- Are Elgin watches valuable?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertMay 17, 2024Yes, Elgin watches are valuable. The American watchmaker’s timepieces are widely favored by collectors all over the world. Watch lovers won’t likely pay more than a few hundred dollars for a vintage model, while rare Elgin timepieces, especially Art Deco-era wristwatches sporting gold cases, will fetch much higher sums. Whether or not an antique Elgin watch is a good investment, however, will depend upon factors such as rarity, condition, materials and more.
The Elgin National Watch Company was founded in Elgin, Illinois, in 1864 and was at one time the largest manufacturer of watches in the United States. In 1867, Elgin introduced its first watch — a pocket watch.
In the late 1800s, the open-face pocket watch became a staple on the American railroad. It was a requirement for railway workers to wear a pocket watch, as the timepieces were responsible for keeping conductors on schedule. This was a boon to the watchmaking industry, with companies like Hamilton, Elgin and the Waltham Watch Company producing high-grade and workingman’s watches. So-called “railroad watches” were among the finest watches of the era, and Elgin railroad watches are coveted today by watch enthusiasts.
As vintage watches of all kinds are making a comeback — even watchmakers such as Patek Philippe, Breitling and Omega are reissuing mid-century models — Elgin watches are in high demand on the secondary market.

Find vintage and antique Elgin watches on 1stDibs. - What is Elgin American?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022Elgin American was an American brand known for producing watches, jewelry and compacts during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Illinois Watchcase Company owned it. In 1901, the company abandoned the Elgin name due to trademark infringement claims made by the Elgin National Watch Co. Find a selection of Elgin American art, jewelry and watches on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertMarch 3, 2023To identify an Elgin wristwatch, examine the dial. Until 1960, all timepieces produced by the American watchmaker showed the "Elgin" name on the dial. After the 1960s, the dials typically displayed an "E" to signify the maker. You can also check the stamp on the back of the case. Most Elgin watches will have a four digit style number above a circular stamp that specifies the watch material. Below the circular stamp, you will usually find a series of numbers that relates to the case manufacturer. You can search for the style number using trusted online resources to identify the style name for many Elgin watches. A certified appraiser or experienced vintage watch dealer can also provide assistance with identifications. Shop a range of Elgin wristwatches on 1stDibs.
- How do you date an Elgin watch?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertMarch 25, 2024How you date an Elgin watch depends on its age. On watches produced before 1956, you should generally examine their movement serial number. The Elgin National Watch Company numbered its movements sequentially from its founding through 1955, so you can easily determine the age of a timepiece by cross-referencing the movement serial number with information provided by trusted online resources. For newer watches, a combination of dial markings and case model numbers can be used to determine the year of production. Again, you can consult trusted online resources for guidance. Another option is to have a knowledgeable watchmaker or antiques dealer examine your timepiece. Shop a variety of Elgin watches on 1stDibs.
- Are Elgin watches any good?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertFebruary 1, 2024Yes, many experts feel that Elgin watches are good from a quality standpoint. During its century in business, the American watchmaker developed a stellar reputation for producing reliable timepieces out of fine materials. Today, many styles of Elgin watches, particularly the company's railroad watches, are popular among collectors. On 1stDibs, shop a collection of Elgin watches.
- Are Elgin watches real gold?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022Whether or not Elgin watches are gold depends on the timepiece in question. The watchmaker did produce pocket watches and wristwatches out of 10-karat, 14-karat and 18-karat gold, but some timepieces are just goldtone metal. On 1stDibs, find a variety of Elgin watches.
- Are Elgin watches still made?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertMarch 25, 2024No, Elgin watches aren't still made. The Elgin National Watch Company stopped producing watches in 1968. However, it did license its name rights to a number of other watchmakers. Although they have the same name, timepieces manufactured under Elgin licensing agreements have no other connection to the ones made by the Elgin National Watch Company. On 1stDibs, shop a collection of Elgin watches.
- Is Elgin a high-end watch?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertFebruary 1, 2024Yes, many people consider an Elgin to be a high-end watch. The American watchmaker produced a line of luxury-grade timepieces, which it sold at aspirational price points. Interestingly, modern-day collectors tend to favor the company's mid- and entry-level watches. Its line of railroad pocket watches is especially popular. Explore a wide range of Elgin watches on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022In Elgin watches, grade means what quality the timepieces are. Elgin assigned grades based on the type of movement and the type of finish on its watches. Higher grade watches tended to cost more than lower grade ones. On 1stDibs, find a collection of Elgin watches.
- 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022The easiest way to identify your Elgin pocket watch is to enter the serial number into an authoritative online database. To find the serial number, open the timepiece and look at the inner movement. On 1stDibs, find a selection of expertly vetted Elgin pocket watches.
- 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021It depends on the materials that the watches are made with, the significance of the model and the year of production. Railroad pocket watches can range from $200 to $5000.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022No, Lord Elgin watches are no longer being made. The company responsible for Lord Elgin watches was the Elgin National Watch Company or Elgin Watch Company which was in business from 1864 to 1968. The company sold watches under several names, including Lord Elgin before going out of business. Find vintage Lord Elgin watches from some of the world’s top boutiques on 1stDibs.
