Rand's work as a painter and muralist is held in the collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Paris, and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. His graphic works and books are held by the Metropolitan Museum Of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Art Institute Of Chicago, The Brooklyn Museum, the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Smithsonian Institution, and The New York Public Library; and are owned by Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Brown, and Johns Hopkins universities. Born in Brooklyn, Rand received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in cinegraphics from the Pratt Institute, having studied previously at the Art Students League of New York. His first exhibition was in 1966, at the Tibor de Nagy Gallery in New York. He has since had over 100 solo exhibitions, and his work has been included in over 200 group exhibitions. He is currently Presidential Professor of Art at Brooklyn College which granted him the Award for Excellence in Creative Achievement in 2016. Before joining Brooklyn College, Rand was the chair of the Department of Visual Arts at Columbia University. The Italian Academy For Advanced Studies in America at Columbia University presented him with The Siena Prize in 1995. He was awarded a Guggenheim Foundation Foundation Fellowship in 1999 and was made a Laureate of the National Foundation for Jewish Culture, which awarded him the Achievement Medal for Contributions in the Visual Arts. In 2002 he received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching from Columbia University. In 2002 he became the artistic advisor to film director Ang Lee for his production of The Hulk, and was asked by Milestone Films to provide a commentary track for the DVD release of Henri-Georges Clouzot’s classic 1955 film The Mystery of Picasso. Archie Rand’s earliest major works are “The Letter Paintings” (or “The Jazz Paintings”) (1968–71), a radically positioned series of technically inventive, mural-sized canvases. The Letter Paintings, by incorporating the names of mainly male and female African-American musicians, undermined prevailing aesthetic categories by conflating many contemporary movements including Conceptual Art, Color Field, Pattern and Decoration, diary entry and social commentary. In 1974 Rand received a commission from Congregation B’nai Yosef in Brooklyn. Rand was asked to paint thematic murals on the complete 16,000-square-foot (1,500 m2) interior surfaces of the synagogue. The work took three years, and completing this commission made Rand the author of the only narratively painted synagogue in the world and the only one we know of since the 2nd Century Dura-Europos. The religious legal controversy raised by placing wall paintings in a traditionally iconoclastic space was resolved by the verdict of Rabbi Moshe Feinstein, then considered to be the world’s leading Talmudic scholar, who declared the paintings to be in conformity with the law. His subsequent turn to figuration may have been influenced by his friendship with Philip Guston, whose own work was transformed in the late 1960s. Like Guston, Rand "chafed at the limitations of purely abstract forms." A near-cult figure who started out as a child prodigy and whose admirers range from John Ashbery to Julian Schnabel. Rand’s paintings display a vast and savvy menu of inventive and finely executed approaches. He has completed many series after the works of Paul Celan, Moyshe-Leyb Halpern, Eugenio Montale, Yehuda Amichai, Rainer Maria Rilke, Samuel Beckett/Paul Eluard and Jack Spicer. Working often with poets, he has produced books and continues to engage in publishing collaborative projects. He maintained a correspondence with the American British Jewish painter R.B. Kitaj. In 2008, on a warehouse wall, Rand mounted the painting, “The 613”, which at 1700 square feet (17’ x 100’) is nearly twice the size of James Rosenquist’s F-111. It is one of the largest freestanding paintings ever made. Reminiscent of “The Segments” paintings it is intimidatingly enormous. Paradoxically, despite the raucous cartoony bytes that shoot colorful flashes from the manic surface, “The 613” glows warmly. Its overall effect is strangely calming and majestic. "The 613" In 2015 Blue Rider/Penguin/Random House published The 613, allotting one color plate per page for each of the 614 units in the painting. The Wall Street Journal labeled The 613 as “dynamic…remarkable…thrilling” The New York Times selected the book as “Editors' Choice” and praised it in two separate reviews calling it “wonderfully garish” and declaring that “nothing prepared the art world for 'The 613.' Recent Activity In 2016 Rand showed two bodies of work that were done in Italy, “La Certosa Di Pontignano, 1995” and “Mount Etna, 2005,” at The Interchurch Center Galleries, New York. From 2016 to 2017 he served as the Curator and Juror for the Governor of Wyoming’s Capitol Arts Exhibition at The Wyoming State Museum, Cheyenne, WY. A 2017 exhibition, “Archie Rand: Early Works With Poetry”, featured two series of work from 1991 and 1993 after poems by Jack Spicer and Samuel Beckett/Paul Eluard. Alfred Aberdam (1894–1963) painter and graphic artist was a painter of School of Paris, born in Lvov, capital of Galicia, Austro-Hungarian Empire. Born in Lviv, Krystonopol, East Galicia (now Chervonograd, Ukraine) and received a traditional Jewish education in a Heder while studying Hebrew with private teachers. In 1905–12 he lived in Lvov, where he finished high school. He decided to become an artist at the age of 14. At this time he came into contact with young Yiddish Judaic writers (Melech Ravitch, Abraham Moshe Fuks, and others) and with Zionist youth groups in Lvov. He attended their meetings and their lectures on Jewish Judaica artists. After graduating high school, he organized several conferences in his hometown on Italian and Flemish masters and on the first Jewish painters, including Josef Israels (1824-1911). In 1911 he started to study art at the Munich Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Akademie der Bildenden Künste München. Lemberg/Lwów (today Lviv), studies under Gabriel von Hackl (1843-1926). During World War I he was imprisoned by the Russians and stayed in the camp for prisoners of war in Siberia where he became acquainted with David Burliuk and other Russian futurists. In 1917, Aberdam was appointed People’s Commissar of the Department of Fine Arts by the local soviet, which assigned him the task of reorganizing artistic teaching. A year later, in Moscow, he befriended the poet Vladimir Mayakovski. In 1921 in Poland, he began his studies at Kraków's Academy of Fine Arts under Professor Teodora Axentowicz, then lived in Paris. There he participated in numerous exhibitions, and in a Poland exhibition in the Gallery of Modern Art Editions in 1929. In the latter he organized the exhibition in 1931. In 1932 he exhibited in Warsaw and Lviv. From 1933 he belonged to a group of visual artists known as "Nowocześni". In 1923, while he was staying in Berlin, he met Menkes and Weingart in sculptor Alexander Archipenko’s studio. In 1924, he settled in Paris in the Montparnasse area. In the end of 1925, Jan Sliwinski held an exhibition in his gallery Au Sacre du Printemps, at 5 rue du Cherche-Midi, Paris. Oil on canvas, signed lower left Georges Gaston Arnulf est un peintre et graveur français, né à Monte-Carlo (Monaco) le 23 mars 1921 et mort le 19 novembre 1996 au Thillay. Georges Arnulf est originaire d'une ancienne famille niçoise. Il est le neveu de Gaston Arnulf, ancien conseiller général, et le fils d'un ancien hôtelier niçois. Il fait toutes ses études au lycée de Monaco et au lycée de Nice. Après avoir suivi les cours de dessin et de décoration à l'École nationale des arts décoratifs de Nice, où il est l'élève de Jules Henri Lengrand, il est reçu en 1946 à l'École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris, présenté par Pierre-Henri Ducos de La Haille le 30 octobre 1947, il y fréquente les ateliers de fresque et de gravure. Il entre chez le taille-doucier Robert Cami où il continue son apprentissage du burin1, de l'eau-forte, de la manière noire. Il obtient en 1950 le premier grand prix de Rome de gravure en taille douce2 et il est missionné pour réaliser l'étiquette de la bouteille du Château Mouton Rothschild 19503. Pensionnaire à la villa Médicis à Rome pendant trois ans et demi4, il voyage et grave au burin l'illustration d'une édition de luxe des sonnets de Shakespeare traduits en français par François-Victor Hugo, préfacé par André Maurois (éditions Henri Javal, 1954). Revenu à Paris en 1955, il réalise la mise en page et l'illustration au burin et à l'aquatinte d'un livre de poèmes de Philippe de Rothschild, Éclos à l'aube. En 1956 il part pour le Liban comme conseiller artistique et technique de l'Imprimerie catholique de Beyrouth, au cours de cette période il effectue différents séjours en Égypte et en Asie mineure. En 1957, il signe un contrat comme conseiller artistique attaché au service des publications du ministère de la Culture en Colombie. Il est chargé par ailleurs de la conception et de la réalisation de 20 vitraux destinés à l'église coloniale San Francisco de Bogotà, qu'il mène à bien selon la technique traditionnelle avec l'aide d'un maitre-verrier. Il exécute aussi les fresques de l'hôtel Tonchalà à Cucuta et dirige la restauration de 200 tableaux appartenant aux diverses églises de l'époque coloniale colombienne. Il devient par la suite directeur artistique des éditions de la compagnie Seguros Colombia et de la banque Banco de construccion y desarrollo à Bogotà. Attiré par l'immensité et la diversité des paysages colombiens, il visite les Llanos, l'Amazonie et les régions les plus reculées du Magdalena et du Huila : San Augustin et Tierradentro, vastes zones archéologiques, d'où il rapporte de nombreux croquis de sculptures monumentales et de fresques des nécropoles, qui viennent compléter ceux pris au musée national et au musée de l'or de Bogota. Ce long travail est à l'origine de la collection des Estampes précolombiennes, à laquelle il se consacre dès son retour en France en 1966, et dont le premier volume paru en avril 1967 est présenté à la galerie-librairie de Gérard Mourgue à Paris5. La même année, pour se détendre du travail minutieux de la gravure, il réalise une fresque dans le patio de la villa Joya d'Alexandre Reza à Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. Il est alors nommé professeur de dessin à l'École nationale d'art décoratifs de Nice où il reste jusqu'en 1968, puis il obtient un poste — chargé de cours « Formes et graphismes » — à la faculté de Vincennes en 1969. Il fait transporter sa presse, achetée avant son départ pour la villa Médicis et rangée chez ses parents, dans l'atelier de sa nouvelle maison au Thillay. Atteint de maladie de la moelle osseuse, il est hospitalisé durant des mois. En réaction à la souffrance et à l'immobilité, il dessine alors quantité de croquis à la pointe bic qui seront autant d'études pour ses futures gravures. Les plus grands spécialistes le condamnent à très court terme, mais il guérit et reprend ses activités. Il se spécialise alors dans la réalisation de décorations murales en cuivres gravés de 10 à 20 m2 installées dans plusieurs facultés et lycées au Havre, Poitiers, Niort, Granville, ainsi qu'un monumental mobile...

Mortimer Borne, Printmaker, painter, sculptor, and educator was born in Rypin, Poland in 1902 and emigrated to the US in 1916. He studied at the National Academy of Design, The Art Students League, The Beaux-Arts Institute of Design, and with Charles Webster Hawthorne, founder of the Cape Cod School of Art in Provincetown. Painted in a thick impasto style similar in technique to Samuel Rothbort and David Burliuk. Borne himself taught at The New School for Social Research in New York City from 1945-1967. From the 1920s through the 40s he was a prolific producer of New York City cityscapes and genre scenes. In later decades, he adopted a more modernist style apparently influenced by Picasso, producing color drypoints of abstracted figures. His works were widely exhibited in museums in the U.S. and abroad from 1931 and later, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the American Institute of Graphic Arts, Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Corcoran Gallery of Art, New York Public Library, Carnegie Institute, and Royal Society of Painters, Etchers and Engravers in London.
