c.1840 English Ormolu Carriage Clock by James McCabe
By James McCabe
Located in Greenlawn, NY
Maker:
James McCabe, # 2748.
Description:
A good English mid-19th century ormolu eight-day double fusee carriage clock.
Case:
The typical McCabe case has beveled glasses to 4 sides, a folding handle with a reeded center and a lift-out shuttered back door engraved with the needed indications.
Dial:
The silvered, elaborately engraved dial has Roman numerals for the hours, steel-cut hands and is signed ‘Jas. McCabe, London’.
Movement:
The eight-day twin-fusee movement has well-cut wheelwork, a push-button repeat, is wound and set off the backplate, strikes on a large coiled gong and is engraved ‘Jas McCabe, London, 2478’. The balance platform above has an underslung lever escapement with a monometallic balance wheel.
Notes:
The engraving on the dial was most likely done by Thomas Cole who was part of McCabe’s workshop between 1825-43.
The seemingly original travel case has gilt initials on top and a restored purple felt interior.
Ref:
James McCabe was responsible for some of the best English carriage clocks...
