Jean-Michel Folon Art
Belgian, b. 1934
Jean-Michel Folon (1934 – 2005), better known as “Folon,” was a Belgian painter, illustrator, and sculptor who produced images featured in various publications throughout the world. He is renowned for his branded watercolor illustrations of often whimsical birds, winged people, and other peculiar characters painted in a surrealistic style. Early in his career Folon published his drawings in newspapers mostly in the USA, where he was recognized earlier than in Europe, and illustrated books by Franz Kafka and Ray Bradbury, amongst others. He created numerous works in many different media for well known individuals and cultural institutions worldwide, including in theatre, opera, subways, film and television, sculptures, tapestries, church windows and even a flag.(Biography provided by ArtWise)

Jean Michel Folon "L' Arbre" Serigraph for Gallerie Marquet, Paris, 1975
By Jean-Michel Folon
Located in San Carlos, CA
Gorgeous 1975 serigraph after Jean Michel Folon's beautiful "l'arbre" or "forest". Produced in 1975 by Editions Marquet for Gallery Marquet in Paris, France.
This print is in excellent condition, see pictures for details. It comes unframed.
Jean-Michel Folon’s (Belgium 1934 - 2005) enigmatic landscapes and mysterious humanoid forms helped revolutionize conceptual approaches to illustration in the late 20th century. While Folon has worked across multiple disciplines—including painting, textile, sculpture, stained glass, and printmaking—he is perhaps best known for his drawings and watercolors depicting landscapes in the vein of Surrealist masters such as Salvador Dalà and René Magritte. These works depicted idyllic forests and prison-like skyscrapers populated by butterfly or bird/human hybrids he called “Everymen.” Folon’s drawings were published in such publications as Esquire, The New Yorker, and Time, among others, and he illustrated a number of well-known books. Folon widely exhibited during his lifetime, including at institutions such as Les Arts Décoratifs, the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London, and the Musée Picasso.
