Johann Friedrich Eberlein Sculptures

German, 1696-1749

Johann Friedrich Eberlein was a German sculptor, having been active at Meissen manufactory since 1735, a few years after Johann Joachim Kaendler's start of a professional career in Meissen (1731). Eberlein created in collaboration with Kaendler and Johann Gottlieb Ehder the famous Swan Set in 1737–42, consisting of more than 2200 separated parts.

Meissen Porcelain Group 'Europe on the Bull', by J.F. Eberlein, circa 1860
By Johann Friedrich Eberlein
Located in Vienna, AT
Excellent large meissen figurine group around 1860: Beautiful, youthful Europe, the primordial mother of the continent, with her hair tied back and adorned with flowers, sits sideways on the strong, white bull, which is actually the transformed father of the god Zeus, who kidnaps the young woman. She is covered only with a large floor-length cloth with golden stars. With her right hand she holds on to one of the animal's horns, with her left hand she grasps its neck, a flower garland adorns the animal's head, two nymphs wrapped in shawls kneel at Europe's feet and offer flowers from a basket. The group is based on an oval base with rocaille decoration heightened in gold. Design: Johann Friedrich Eberlein (1695 - 1749) From 1735 sculptor and modeller at the Meissen porcelain factory. Eberlein worked with Johann Friedrich Eberlein (1706 - 1775) - a modeller at the Meissen manufactory since 1731: Together with J. J. KÄNDLER and Johann Gottlieb Ehder, he created the swan service with more than 2,200 individual items between 1737 and 1742. Eberlein's own creations show classical deities on opulent baroque...

Meissen Porcelain Revelry Groups
By Meissen Porcelain
Located in New Orleans, LA
This charming pair of Meissen porcelain figures celebrates the essence of Revelry. First modeled by the renowned Johann Joachim Kändler on bases by Peter Reinicke, circa 1767, these joyous groups depict musicians making merry by playing the French horn, flute, guitar and hurdy-gurdy, and gardeners carrying flowers in baskets and aprons. Two almost identical groups are featured in Meissen: Collector’s Catalogue by Laurence Mitchell. Figures by Kändler were especially popular and served as table decorations at courtly banquets. He took the reigns of the Meissen factory in 1733 and over the following 40 years created more than 900 models, many of which were considered the most important and beautiful ever produced. Many of his designs were so timeless and classic that they continued to be used well into the 19th century. Kändler was highly regarded especially for his allegorical representations and he was certainly at his best when designing the Four Continents...

Pair of Very Early Meissen Figurines, Dance Couple, Germany, Around 1755
By Meissen Porcelain, Johann Friedrich Eberlein
Located in Vienna, AT
Galant dance couple consisting of two individual figures. The female dancer wears rural Rococo clothing: a long, striped skirt with a bodice, a fitted vest over it, a flowered apron, which she holds up at the ends with her arms stretched out to the side, and a hat tied over a cloth on her head. The figure is supported by a rock and is based on a round meadow base with plastic flowers and gold-enhanced rocailles. The male dancer also wears the finest Rococo clothing: white frock coat over a flowered waistcoat, matching his partner's apron, breeches and buckled shoes, and a tricorne hat. Like the lady dancer, the figure is supported from behind by a rock and is based on a flat meadow base with sculpted flowers. Designer: FRIEDRICH ELIAS MEYER (1723 - 1785) called 'the Elder', was a German sculptor and porcelain modeler in the Rococo period. He created numerous models for the Meissen porcelain manufactory and worked closely with dealers there, but made a name for himself above all as a master model in the Royal Porcelain Manufactory in Berlin. Meyer designed model 2306 circa 1755. JOHANN FRIEDRICH EBERLEIN (1695 - 1749) From 1735 sculptor and modeller at the Meissen porcelain factory. Eberlein worked with JOHANN JOACHIM KÄNDLER (1706 - 1775) - a modeller at the Meissen manufactory since 1731: Together with J. J. KÄNDLER and Johann Gottlieb Ehder, he created the swan service with more than 2,200 individual items between 1737 and 1742.
