Vintage African Waist Belt Decorated with Cowries Sea Shells Handcrafted Boho style beaded tie belt in Turquoise color seeds, shells and beads. Vintage African waist Belt decorated with cowrie seashells. Cowrie shells are symbols of fertility, womanhood and wealth in Africa. This belt has cowrie shells on a black fabric background. Cowrie shell belt is a tribe favorite you need in your wardrobe. Cowries sea shells have been popular in various cultures, including those in Japan, India, and West Africa. These mollusks were used as modes of communicating messages between villages, as decorations, or associated with religious rituals and deities. Cowries’ durability and relative rarity made them a popular currency, too. By the 1600s, demand was so high that instead of bringing them overland on camel caravans, traders had begun importing cowries by sea. These shells are also a symbols of birth.
