Japanese Antique Momoyama Edo Bizen Ware Pottery Wabi-Sabi Art Tsubo Jar Vase
About the Item
An absolutely stunning Bizen ware stoneware vase/jar/vessel - produced sometime during the late Momoyama period (1568-1600) / Early Edo Period (1603-1867). Bizen yaki ware is a type of Japanese pottery traditionally from the Bizen province, presently a part of Okayama prefecture. Bizen is considered one of the Six Ancient Japanese Kilns (along with Echizen ware, Seto ware, Shigaraki ware, Tamba ware, and Tokoname ware). Pottery from this area is characterized by significant hardness due to high-temperature firing and its earthen-like, reddish-brown color; absence of glaze, although it may contain traces of molten ash resembling glaze; and natural, organic perchance markings resulting from wood-burning kiln firing.
This particular piece, which is called Sanji-Ko "three eared vase/vase with three ears", encompasses the Japanese Wabi-Sabi aesthetic - the appreciation of beauty that is imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete in nature and embraces the principles of asymmetry, roughness, simplicity, economy, austerity, modesty, intimacy, and the appreciation of both natural objects and the forces of nature upon them.
The work appears to have the maker's mark near the upper rim.
A gorgeous aged patina, organic texture, and natural forming ash glaze. Would be a great addition to any Asian or Japanese pottery/ceramics collection or a clear eye-catching stand-alone accent piece in about any setting.
