Japanese Contemporary Iga Stoneware Bowl by Shiro Tsujimura
About the Item
A contemporary Stoneware Bowl made in the tradition of Iga ware by Japanese ceramic artist Shiro Tsujimura (1947-). In a slightly irregular round form, the deep bowl is called Hachi in Japanese. They are reminiscent of the alms bowl monks hold for food donation. Made from local coarse sandy clay and largely fired without glazing, the bowl has a lovely orange-reddish glow. The random ashes falling onto the piece created a random pattern, considered beauty to the eyes. There are also small areas of feldspars and vitrification, occurred unpredictably during the firing process. All these rendered the piece a strong Wabi-Sabi aesthetic that is one of the essences of Japanese art.
The bowl bears the artist's carved mark on the base as shown. comes with its original tomobako inscribed in Kanji with title (Iga Hachi Bowl) and signed Shiro and sealed Shi. It has a wrapping cloth as well.

- Large Contemporary Ceramic Tsubo Jar by Kai TsujimuraLocated in Atlanta, GAA massive stoneware tsubo floor jar created by Japanese contemporary ceramic artist Kai Tsujimura (1976-). The heavy jar with its impressive volume was made in the tradition of Iga ware with local coarse sandy clay that turned reddish after the firing. It took its shape from heavy medieval storage jars with a wide-open mouth. For a nearly identical form, see an Echizen jar from Heian period (794–1185) in the collection of MET (Accession Number: 1977.261). The surface showcases scattered white crystalized feldspars and a green vitrified ash glaze cascade down the body (known as biidoro in Japanese - after the Portuguese word for glass vidoro). These is a globular shape impressed on the jar. It is a signature practice of the Tsujimura potter family by stacking bowls between the pieces in the kiln during the firing, resulting in an accidental but iconic aethetic (Kai and Yui Tsujimura...Category

- Japanese Ceramic Bowl Makuzu Kozan Utusushi KenzanBy Makuzu KozanLocated in Atlanta, GAA rare ceramic bowl with over glaze painted decoration by Japanese imperial potter Makuzu Kozan ((1842–1916). Unlike the better known works Kozan made for the expositions in the west and export to the foreign market, this piece exemplifies his work for the domestic market and the tea ceremony. The bowl was made in the so called "Utusushi" Ogata Kenzan (1663-1743), an celebrated Edo painter and ceramicist. Utusushi is loosely translated as "in the spirit of". It is not at all a simple imitation of a master, but a Japanese concept of embracing the spiritual essence of a master while the creator is free to mix in his or her own unique artistic interpretation and flavor. The bowl was made to hold fruits during the tea ceremony. It has a very distinguished form with a circular lower body morphing into a square upper portion that further opening with flared rim. The surface has a grey glaze onto which Asagao flowers (Japanese morning glory) on the vines were painted in a free and poetic style. White was used for the petals, green for the leaves with touches of gold highlight. Asagao, the symbol of the summer was rendered in the spirit of Ogata Kenzan, and interestingly the shape of the blossom echoes the unique form the bowl. It was likely reserved for the tea ceremony during the summer months. Under the base, Kozan was signed in black on an white porcelain plaque inlay. For two similar examples of Kozan's work Utusushi Kenzan, see Page 168-169 of the book: Sekai ni Aisa Reta ya Kimono Miyagawa Kozan Makuzu...Category
