  • Ken Beldin Large Scarab Design Pendant, Mid-Century Mexican Mixed Metal
    By Ken Beldin
    Located in Phoenix, AZ
Modern scarab design vintage mixed metal necklace made in Mexico by ex-pat artist Ken Beldin 1940s and 1950s. Signed on the back: Ken Beldin. In excellent vintage condition. The pendant measures: 3" H x 2 1/4" W. The necklace chain is made of copper, shells, beads, and leather and is approximately 20" total length. The pendant bears a lovely green patina and hangs from the original chain. Ken Beldin (1900-?) was born in Mississippi and was educated at U. of C. Berkeley. He retired as head of a successful ad agency in Los Angeles in 1931 to travel through the Southwest. He worked for a time with Mexico’s National Railways attracting tourists to travel to Mexico by rail and was drawn into the rugged beauty of Mexico and its people. He set up a studio in Tenencingo South of Mexico City near Taxco and began creating one of a kind jewelry and sculpture. He was the custodian of a collection of archeological Pre-Columbian stones, and it was from these he derived his motifs. His "modern Ethnic" jewelry was considered to have the most feeling and the most authentic look of the Period. He worked throughout the 1940s and 1950s with copper, brass, steel, wood and leather. His work was admired and collected by some of the elite of Hollywood including Barbara Hutton, Edward G. • Mathilde Schaefer Modern Studio Pot with Horse Motif
    By Mathilde Schaefer
    Located in Phoenix, AZ
Beautiful and whimsical ceramic vase handmade by celebrated artist Mathilde Schaefer, wife of noted Arizona artist Lew Davis. This unusual and rare terra cotta vase with a glazed turquoise interior (and other glazed portions: manes, tails, hooves and eyes), is dated 1949 on the bottom in pencil and marked "Desert Kilns Arizona." Also inscribed in pencil on the bottom: “Merry Christmas from Bill Benton.” We are not certain who the recipient was but the vase was owned and given as a gift by Bill Benton, a Senator from Connecticut who wintered in Arizona. He was a friend of Frank Lloyd Wright in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s when Arizona and Phoenix in particular had a very active art community. Known in Arizona in the 1960s as an instructor of pottery and sculpture at the Desert School of Art in Scottsdale and also as the wife of artist Lew Davis, she was born in New York City and studied with Raoul Josset and Walter Lemcke. In 1938, she began exhibiting at the Art Institute of Chicago. She married Davis and they moved to Scottsdale, Arizona where she maintained a studio. Her sculpture is in numerous collections including that of International Business Machines...

  • Rose Cabat Studio Ceramic Signed Weed Pot or “Feelie”
    By Rose Cabat
    Located in Phoenix, AZ
This Rose Cabat (1914-2015) glazed porcelain weed pot bears her traditional “feelie” soft glaze with large drips showing near the base. Measures: 3.75" H x 2.75" D. Mint condition. No damage. Signed CABAT Rose Cabat (1914-2015) was an American studio ceramicist, known for her innovative glazes upon small porcelain pots called ‘feelies.’ She was born in 1914 and met her eventual husband Erni when they were schoolchildren in New York City in the 1920s, marrying in 1936. Erni worked in advertising and apprenticed for Austrian potter and sculptor Vally Wieselthier. One day, Erni brought a lump of clay home to the apartment that he shared with Rose. This simple act sparked a passion that continued unabated for the rest of her life. After making a simple coiled vase from the clay, Rose learned wheel throwing at Greenwich House Pottery, teaching herself to work on a kick wheel. When their son’s asthma prompted the family to move from New York to Tucson, Arizona, Erni built Rose an unassuming studio on the dusty streets outside town that Rose referred to as a “shack.” He obtained a potter’s wheel made from a converted washing machine and she used a tractor seat for a stool. Life intervened in the form of a growing family, World War II, and a job as a riveter on an Air Force base, but Rose persisted. In 1957, she attended a five-week glaze course offered by the art department at the University of Hawaii. In this course, she was exposed to modern studio ceramics...
