Late 19th Century Japanese Stencil-Dyed Textile / Kumano-zome
This 2-panel cotton textile was made in the Kumano region of Okayama Prefecture in the south of Honshu Island, Japan. It’s unique moire-like pattern is known as ‘Kumano-zome’ (dyed in Kumano). The pattern is achieved by overlaying two varied stencil designs, one of narrow indigo and white stripes and the other of wave-like undulating lines in a lighter indigo. The production of Kumano-zome is thought to have died out by the early 1900s.
Mounted on wood stretcher frame with acid-free substrate.
