"Stylized Flowers, " Rare Art Deco Exhibition Piece by Catteau, Paris 1925 Expo
About the Item
Exceedingly rare, and historically important, this unique flat-bottomed bowl or dish was designed by Charles Catteau for Keramis in 1925 and was exhibited at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes (International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts, in English), an event that later gave the Art Deco style its name. The piece depicts a cluster of three stylized flowers, set into a ruddy-tan ground that resembles sand on a beach, interspersed with areas of dark glaze that suggest patches of shadow on a bright, sunny day. It is exceedingly difficult to locate pieces that were exhibited at the famed 1925 Expo in Parish, so this piece is a very special find. It is well marked on the bottom.
