Antique French Ormolu and Sevres Porcelain Clock
About the Item
A lovely early antique French ormolu clock by Louis Japy, part of the great Japy clockmaking dynasty. It is of Louis XVI design and mounted with exquisite Sèvres style porcelain panels. The porcelain has a Bleu Celeste ground with delicately cherub, flowers and exotic birds. To the top is classical urn with a garland of roses trailing down both sides.
The dial is porcelain enamel on copper and is complete with original finely fretted gilt brass hands and convex glass. The rear bezel is glazed with frosted glass.
The French movement is of high quality and is by Louis Japy et Fils, the early version of the makers mark is on the movement back plate. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is an old replacement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. We have a video of the clock running, please ask and we will send you a link.
Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is clean and bright with some wear to the high spots. The dial is also very good. Porcelain is very good with some wear to the over-glaze gilt decoration, this has been touched in in places.

- Fine and Early Sevres Porcelain and Ormolu Antique French ClockBy Henri Picard, Raingo Frères, Manufacture Nationale de SèvresLocated in Belper, DerbyshireA fine and early clock, the case by Henri Picard of Paris and the movement by Raingo Frères. It is beautifully made of ormolu (mercury fire gilded bronze doré) mounted with exquisitely painted Sèvres style porcelain with a Bleu Celeste ground. The front panel shows a young couple, tending a flock of sheep in a tranquil country setting, a sleepy town in the distance. Above the dial she sits in fine clothes and the urn to the top shows them older together, a story of their love. Side panels are beautifully decorated with bows, flowers and a quiver of arrows. Other panels are delicately decorated with over glaze gilt decoration with applied porcelain 'jewels'. The porcelain is all signed to the reveres and numbered with movement number '1453', unusually the case is also numbered. The dial is porcelain with its original finely cut brass Breguet hands and is signed for the clockmaker Raingo Frères. The rear bezel is glazed to allow the movement to be seen. Please note that this design does not have a front glass over the dial. The French movement is of high quality and is by Raingo Freres.
