About the Item
Empire period gilt bronze figurative mantel clock
French, early 19th century
Measures: Height 33cm, width 31cm, depth 12cm
This superb mantel clock is a wonderful example of the type of clock that prevailed during the Empire period. The clock, crafted from gilt bronze, is mounted with a large sculptural group comprised of a classical female figure and a brazier aflame. The clock is set throughout with elements and motifs typical to the period: the exotic cats set to the front of the base allude to the Egyptian influence that flourished in Empire period decorative art, while the sculptural group evinces the Neoclassicism of the day. The clock is inset with a white enamel dial inscribed with a rubbed signature.
