A Regency Quarter Chiming Bracket Clock
By A. & J. Thwaites
Located in Amersham, GB
A very fine triple fusee quarter chiming bracket clock in an ebonised case in remarkable original condition. The eight day triple fusee movement with anchor escapement and long heavy bob pendulum and hold fast, chimes on a nest of eight graduated bells with a seperate bell to strike the hours. The movement also has a pull correction lever. The cream painted roman dial is fitted behind the original convex glass held in with a brass ogee bezel, the case has front and rear locks with the movement visible through a glaze back door. The movement is housed in an oak case veneered in ebonised fruitwood with brass case decorations and fish scale sound frets backed with yellow silk, the break arch top is surmounted by a single brass bound pad. The dial and back plate both signed by Thomas Bray, the movement is also stamped J Thwaites 4677 on the front plate behind the dial. This leads us to believe this is one of the two clocks recorded as being made by Thwaites for Thomas Bray to retail. The serial number can be traced in the Thwaites day books and dates the clock to 1811. John Thwaites was a prolific clock maker who specialised in quarter chiming and musical clocks often manufacturing movements for some of London’s most prestigious clock makers. John Thwaites was Master of the Clockmakers Company in 1815, 1819 and 1820, his company eventually went on to found the famous Thwaites and Reed company. Examples of Thomas Bray’s work can be found in the British Museum, John Thwaites clocks...

A Rare 18th-Century Georg II Grande Sonnerie Striking Spring Table Clock by William Poulton, London, C.1750 Watchmaker to the King of Spain. A small and extremely attractive English eighteenth-century grande sonnerie striking spring clock with an ebonised fruitwood veneered oak case, made circa 1750. The dial, which is shaped at the top, has a silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring, surrounded by silver rococo spandrels. In addition, there are two subsidiary silvered rings in the shaped top, the right one for rise-and-fall regulation, the opposite for switching off the striking mechanism (strike/silent). The date is indicated in a date aperture situated above the XII. The maker has signed the dial at the top between the subsidiary rings in the following way: William Poulton Watchmaker to the King of Spain London The time is indicated by a pair of finely made blued steel hands on the silvered chapter ring. The eight-day triple fusee...

A Twin Fusee Bracket Clock By Dent
By Dent
Located in Amersham, GB
A striking two train bracket clock of exceptional quality by one of the great nineteenth century makers. The eight day twin fusee movement strikes on a blued steel gong behind a silvered arabic dial, signed Dent and numbered 58242 on both th dial and the back plate. Housed in a solid mahogany case with brass mounts and a gadrooned pergoda top surmounted by an acorn finial, and supported by bun feet. The sides ar pierced with attractive fish scale sound vents lined with dark blue velvet. The movement and case are both of remarkable quality, as you would expect from a clock made by Dent. The history of Dent & Co. spans three centuries of precision watch and clock making in Great Britain. Established in 1814 by Edward J. Dent, the company embraced the Victorian fervour for technological innovation and created precision chronometers to navigate the Royal Navy and guide some of the most intrepid explorers on their voyages. The British Empire was in full expansion and its maritime tradition had produced some remarkable technological breakthroughs from the late 18th century. Propelling the impetus of Britain’s primacy, Dent proved a key player in Victorian horological history manufacturing the Standard Clock at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich which was to keep “Greenwich Mean Time” the time to which all others in the Empire were referred (better known today as G.M.T.) and continued to do so until replaced by an electronic clock in 1946. Dent also made probably the most famous clock in the world - the Great Clock for the Houses of Parliament, familiarly known as Big Ben. Dent’s reputation soared and their chronometers accompanied some of the century's most influential and colourful explorers. Dent chronometer...
