Burmantofts Faience Mantle Clock with Winged Horse
About the Item
A very rare Burmantofts Faience Arts & Crafts mantel clock of flaring rectangular column shape, cast in relief with fruiting swags and winged putti masks, the top surmounted with a grotesque winged horse like creature dating from around 1890. The clock is decorated in pale lime green glazes and set with a brass mounted clock movement with a white enamel circular dial with Roman numerals. The clock is marked model no. 1427 to the base along with an impressed F and makers marks and also benefits from an original paper label attached to the base. The clock movement has age corrosion to the brass casing but overall appears in otherwise good condition however does not have a key and has not been tested.
Provenance: From an extensive and important single owner private collection and acquired by a Belgium based gentleman collector.
The clock is offered in presentable condition and displays well. There is some glaze fritting and chipping around the lower edge of the clock with some surface corrosion around the brass mount. The clock mechanism also remains untested. Nonetheless a very rare and stylish period timepiece and a wonderful display piece.
