Ceramic Sculpture by Eric Astoul
About the Item
Eric Astoul is a renowned French artist established in La Borne, France. His wood-fired stoneware sculptures are rich in this tension between interior and exterior, an internal surge which seems to be able to shatter the work, its erected walls, sharp edges and its soft curves. Forms brush against each other without ever meeting. The work is elevated, conjugating strength and sensibility of form.
Having trained the old-fashioned way in a variety of workshops, Éric discovered
the appeal of stoneware, wood-fired at high temperatures for several days. He
settled in La Borne and built his anagama kiln here. The harmony between the
form and the mineralisation created by the fire is what his exploration is all
about. He is excellent at the wheel, curious, and he practices drawing. From
the 2000s onwards, he began to work with blocks of clay. He separates them,
assembles them, and carves cliffs, verticals. He cuts like a fjord into the heart of
the clay. From the elegance of turning pots to exploring the mass of clay, radiant
works of art are born, powerful sculptures. The body and soul of this potter,
standing still before the clay turning between his fingers, takes you far, far away
The colouring and the material of the raw works, without glazing, are obtained by carrying out a long woodfiring at 1300 °, in direct flames of the anagama kiln. The pieces are loaded into the kiln and isolated from each other by seashells. The marks of the shells; "defects" are visible after firing, since they are embedded in the glaze or in contact with the surfaces of the raw earth. Wood firing , the passage of the flames, the ashes carried through the kiln, imbue a breath of life into the works. The fires contribution. His work is found in the collections of the Musée National Adrien Dubouché (Limoges, France), the Musée National de la Céramique (Sèvres, France), the Ceramics Museum (Frechen, Germany), the Prinzregentenstrasse Museum (Munich, Germany) among other institutions. He has also participated in solo and group exhibitions at galleries and museums in France, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Great Britain, and the United States.
According to Robert Deblander, Eric Astoul’s main concerns “are the ones of a creator, a researcher, an artist who deeply feels the rich vocabulary of clay, fire and shape on the intangible base of stoneware medium. He is destined to overcome utilitarian object, as wonderful as it may have been : it is to be brought back, rewritten, rethought and enriched by the contemporary ceramist’s thousand nuances.”

Mestre is recognized worldwide, won many international awards and has participated in numerous individual and collective exhibitions around the world. His sculptural objects seem sober spatial constructions: boxlike, slab built architectural structures of austere colours dominated by right angles. But appearances are deceptive: these objects have a poetic charm which saves them from only being rational and cold. Through dedication and commitment Mestre has pushed the technical boundaries of this demanding yet humble material, and helped elevate it to a sculptural art form in its own right. As one of the important artists of the Spanish school, his name is mentioned in the same breath as figures such as Jorge Oteiza...Category
