Upsala-Ekeby keramik Ltd. was established on 29 January 1886, in Sweden. Uppsala began with the production of bricks and tiles and other pottery objects. In the 1910s, the company began hiring artists. Among the first designers was Anna-Lisa Thomson and Sven Erik Skawonius, who was leading figures for the growing style now known as modern Scandinavian design. The company’s ceramic manufacturing began in the 1960s in response to growing sales of both tableware, vases and other object used for interior design as well as art ceramics. The company now hired some of their best-known artists and designers such as Hjördis Oldfors, Mari Simmulson, Arthur Percy, Olle Alberius, Carl Malmsten, Vicke Lindstrand, and Ingrid Atterberg to name a few, who has produced so many retro and vintage classics from the 1960s and 70s. The factories closed in 1980.
