About the Item
French Bronze Circa 1905 upon a Marble Oval Base
From our Sculpture collection, we are pleased to offer a French Bronze Belgian Shepherd Figure. The figure mounted upon a green marble base with a convex rim and ormolu border. The bronze cast as a large ormolu recumbent Belgian Shepherd dog with its head to one side wearing an ormolu collar. The bronze beautifully finished with a lifelike look showing its coat with individual strands and peaked ears. The Bronze dates to the turn of the 20th century circa 1905 after the evolution of the Belgian Shepherd in circa 1892.
Belgian Shepherd (also known as the Belgian Malinois or the Chien de Berger Belge) is a breed of medium-sized herding dog from Belgium. While predominantly considered a single breed, it is bred in four distinct varieties based on coat type and colour. The long-haired black Groenendael, the rough-haired fawn Laekenois, the short-haired fawn Malinois, and the long-haired fawn Tervuren. In the United States, the American Kennel Club considers the four varieties to be separate breeds.
Ormolu is the technique of applying finely ground, high-carat gold–mercury amalgam to an object of bronze. The mercury is driven off in a kiln leaving behind a gold coating. The French refer to this technique as bronze doré and in English it is often referred to as gilt bronze. It is a finishing technique which adds an overall gold look to any object without the massive cost and impracticality of making an object out of solid gold. Mercury was outlawed in the 1830’s in France however it was still used until the early 1900s.
Bronze is a metal alloy consisting of copper, about 12% tin and often other metals such as aluminium, manganese, nickel, or zinc and sometimes, non-metals such as phosphorus, arsenic and, silicon. The additions produce a range of alloys that are harder than copper alone and often have other useful properties such as strength, ductility, and/or machinability.
