James Hadley Royal Worcester Rare Majolica Camel & Howdah
About the Item
A very rare and unusual antique Royal Worcester majolica pottery figure of a camel and howdah by renowned potter James Hadley (British, 1837-1903) and dated 22nd June 1870.
James Hadley was an English potter and artist who worked predominantly throughout his career for Royal Worcester however in the last six years did set up his own factory however this was acquired in 1905, after Hadley’s death, by Royal Worcester. During his time at Worcester Hadley was a modeller and has since been described as ‘probably the finest English modeller of all time’.
This exceptional pottery model of a resting camel with a howdah on its back is a stunning example of the work of James Hadley and the figure is well detailed and portrays the camel wearing a harness with its head turned and chewing the fur on its back. The camel has a raised and ornate howdah mounted on its humps with an ornate cloth draped over the camel’s back. The camel is hand painted in majolica tones of brown, mauve, turquoise, blue and yellow with white highlights and is extensively and fully marked to the base. The camel is signed ‘Hadley Sc’ to the base and has Royal Worcester marks along with a registration diamond mark dating the piece to 22nd June 1870. There is also an incised F mark.
