Large Antique Neoclassical Style Plaster Plaque
About the Item
A large antique neoclassical style oval plaster wall plaque. Dating back to circa 1950, this decorative piece has kept its original handcrafted details. It depicts an allegorical and mythological scene.
The large male figure is Bacchus, a God associated with wine and intoxication. His body is covered in a drape while he holds a thyrsus, a staff or spear tipped with an ornament like pinecone - known to be carried by Bacchus and his followers. His shield is leaning on the ground near his feet while an angel on an iconic column gives him the laurel wreath.
This piece is made of heavy solid plaster and the scene is well sculpted - it is a fragment of neoclassical history that would take pride of place in any home.
