Gorge III Hip Flask Made in London by Peter, Ann & William Bateman, 1802
About the Item
A Very Rare Gorge III Hip Flask Made in London in 1802 by Peter, Ann & William Bateman.
Hip Flasks are extremely rare from this early date, as they gain popularity during the Victorian period. This example is plain in design with a kidney shaped form. Most unusually, however, is that the base has a removable drinking cup, with finely gilded interior. The domed cover unscrews and can then be screwed back into the top to act as a stopper. The Hip Flask is in excellent condition, is of a very good gauge and weight, and is fully marked on the main body and the cup and with a second maker's mark on the body. Hip Flasks made by either Hester Bateman, or her family, are especially rare and seldom appear on the market.
