Italian artist Marcello Fantoni ceramic bottle vase is glazed stoneware made circa 1970s. This piece was acquired directly from the artist by the seller, who was a personal friend of Marcello Fantoni. Glazed signature to underside: [Fantoni].

Artist's Bio:
Born in Florence, Marcello Fantoni registered at the Institute of Art at Porta Romana in 1927 to attend the course The Art of Ceramics. He graduated in 1934 as a 'maestro' of art, and began working as a ceramist. In 1936 he established the Fantoni Ceramic studio. Its production of serial and unique pieces had remarkable success at the Florentine Arts and Crafts Exhibit in 1937. Between 1950 and 1970, the success of his work continued to increase, his unique pieces of sculpture and vascular Formations, characterized by a design in step with the contemporary artistic currents, like archaic stylization inspired by Etruscan models, rendered modern because of their modern handling of materials, glazes and colors. His works can be seen at the Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York, the Brooklyn Museum, the Museum of Fine Art of Boston, the Currier Gallery, the Syracuse Museum. In Britain they are in the Victoria and Albert Museum of London, the City Art Gallery of Manchester, at Royal Scottish Museum of Edinburg. In Japan they are present at the Museum of Modern Art of Tokyo and Kyoto. In Italy they are represented at the International Museum of Ceramics in Faenza, the National Bargello Museum and at the Gabinetto Disegni e Stampe of the Uffizi. In his long and versatile career, Fantoni has completed works for churches, public and private buildings, schools, cinemas, theaters and ships cementing himself in both figurative and abstract ceramics and various metals. In 1970 he founded the International School of Ceramic Arts at his laboratory in via Bolognese in Florence where he continued to work and teach until his death in 2011.

Marcello Fantoni
Marcello Fantoni was a Florentine artist who specialized in ceramics. He studied at the Art Institute in Florence, where Libero Andreotti and Bruno Innocenti were his sculpting professors and Gianni Vagnetti was his figurative art professor. Fantoni began to work as a ceramist in 1934, opening his factory in 1936. After the Second World War, he became very successful, and his works are held in some of the world's most important museums (from the USA to Japan).

He continued years of training in ceramics and the arts, including sculpture with Libero Andreotti and Bruno Innocenti, and figurative art with Gianni Vagnetti, graduating as a maestro of art in 1934. After a stint as art director for a ceramics factory in Perugia, in 1936 he opened the Fantoni Ceramic Studio in Florence. Here he produced ceramic series as well as unique pieces, sculptures and furnishings. In 1937 Fantoni’s pieces were exhibited in the Florence National Arts and Crafts Exhibit where their unique combination of rustic forms decorated with African and marine motifs and painted figures garnered considerable acclaim. By the start of World War II Fantoni’s melding of ancient Italian pottery techniques with decidedly Modernist elements had won him artistic and commercial success both in Italy and abroad. Having participated in the resistance, after the War Fantoni worked for the 500-year old Maiolica factory in Deruta, Umbria, renowned for its signature tin-glazed pottery. A very stylish and unusual glazed ceramic handled vase by renowned Italian artist Marcello Fantoni (1915-2011). The rounded bottle shaped vase has a tall funnel neck with a large rounded loop handle attached to one side. The cream coloured body is decorated with run glazes in blue and yellow over a lightly textured purple ground. The vase is signed Fantoni to the base. Marcello Fantoni was born in Florence in 1915 and studied an Art of Ceramics course at the Institute of Art at Porta Romana from where he graduated as a 'maestro' of art in 1934.
