Small " Egyptomania " wood table planter, France circa 1830

About the Item

Small table planter in wood and tin with enameled decorations of flowers, palm leaves and a sarcophagus mask. Egyptomania refers to the revival of European interest in ancient Egypt from 1787 (Volney's Voyage en Egypte et en Syrie), but especially from Bonaparte's Egyptian campaign of 1798 to 1801, initiated by Talleyrand. original pewter inner case. Lacks a decorative motif on the back and two small balls on the upper rim.
