Gabriel Argy-Rousseau
Creative from an early age, Gabriel Argy-Rousseau was a French sculptor, ceramicist and master glassmaker, who played a pivotal role in the glass art movement of the early 20th century. His innovative designs, which included vases, lamps, jewelry, bowls, and other decorative objects, spanned both the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods. After his graduation in 1906, Rousseau took the title of "ceramic engineer", working in a research laboratory before dedicating himself exclusively to the art of glass paste. Gabriel Argy-Rousseau began exhibiting in 1914 and quickly gained critical acclaim and fame. Argy-Rousseau's pâte de verre work is immediately recognizable for its highly individualized technique and decorative style that was evident even in his early work. As was the ideal of the time, nature was the main theme in Argy-Rousseau's work, where flowers, insects, animals and the female form abounded. Beginning in 1917, his naturalistic forms became more and more elongated and the influence of both Japanese art and Greek mythology became more evident.
