Art Deco Ceramic Vase with Hand-Painted Detailing by Arthur Percy for Gefle
About the Item
This stunning hand painted ceramic vase was realized by the esteemed Swedish ceramicist Arthur Percy for Gefle circa 1920. It features a subtly conical body with inset sloped shoulders, a cylindrical neck and a circular mouth. The mouth features black lips and a sunflower yellow band; the shoulders offer two layers in the aforementioned colors; and the body is handpainted with geometric and abstract designs, also in this color palate. Cross hatched x forms and amorphic shapes, as well as striated detailing are among the motifs that have been hand painted onto the surface of the body in high key contrasts of ebullient yellow and a rich glossy black. The base of the piece offers an ombre gradiation in grisaille offering a dynamic juxtaposition to the saturated hues exhibited elsewhere. With its bold and sophisticated color palate and clean modernist lines, this piece is as much a functional vessel as an objet d'art that promises to beautify any surface that it graces. Excellent vintage condition. Signed on the base by the maker.
Arthur Percy (1886-1976) was one of Sweden’s leading ceramic artists in the 20th century. He worked as painter and designer for the Gefle porcelain factory from 1923-59, for Elsa Gullberg's textile firm from 1936-51, and for Gullaskrufs Glasbruk from 1951-59. Percy was a prominent designer of tableware series like Hyacint, Rubin, and Vinranka. His work can been seen in the Swedish National Museum of Art and Design.
