A colorful flamework vessel by Kurt Wallstab from 1987

About the Item

During the late 1970ties flameworkers in Germany went from glass apparatus construction to decorative arts. Some of them with Museum quality pieces that did gain international recognition. Amongst them was Kurt Wallstab who lived and worked near Frankfurt. He became probably the most famous representative of flameworking in studio glass from what was at that time West Germany. Flamework is very light and delicate glass, it is blown while sitting in front of a blow torch. Wallstab's technique of assembling the pieces in perfection was long unmatched and while many of his competitors never got rid of post art nouveau flourish, his pieces were very modern and colorful in the late 1980ties. This is a fine example from 1987. There are many publications including his work, one of them is by Schack von Wittenau, "New Glass and Studio Glass", Schnell + Steiner, Regensburg, 2005, page 68 f. The vessel is signed and dated. Due to it's delicate character, it is rather intended to be a cabinet piece, and not really suitable for holding flowers and water.
