Contemporary porcelain Striped Symmetry Fold II vessel by Steven Edwards

About the Item

Striped Symmetry Fold II delves further into my systematic approach to making and is a natural evolution of surface decoration observed in my Fold series. Exploring the interplay of balance, harmony, and order throughout nature, mathematics, and art, symmetry stands out as the captivating focal point. Using the potter’s wheel and sprig moulds, I meticulously craft each element to achieve intricate surface weaves. Observing the symmetry inherent in halving and mirroring identical surfaces, I assemble two identical halves from a vertical center line, repeating the process to envelope the entire vessel. This process purposely challenges my skills to both right and left-handed building techniques, pushing the boundaries of my making process. • Contemporary Glass vase Sakura II by Maarten Vrolijk
    Located in 1204, CH
The Sakura glass Art collection uses cherry blossoms as its inspiration.“I am bewitched by spring”, Maarten Vrolijk explains. “Where I grew up in small Dutch town. There was a very special cherry tree in our garden that I felt very connected to in a certain way"". ""I regard my Sakura glass as a canvas where I paint with the various glass pieces like a painter with his paint”. As a child there was something magical about how the black dark branches were converted into something magnificent in the form of cherry blossom that was apparent everywhere. I could not understand how people could keep on working or carry on living in the normal way when this miracle was in progress and nature was wakening again. Children see more clearly. As adults we are so busy fighting for our own egos, for money, success, a bigger house and suchlike that we forget what is important. ” The glass vessels are recognised with their outgrowth of colored glass fragments. The volatility in accomplishing the exceptional thickness of his vases creates a risky balance between strength and delicacy. The thermal stress caused when trying to equalize the interior and exterior temperature of the cooling vessels, is fraught with the threat of breakage. The vessels show show a duality between the crystalline clarity posed against their substantial physical impact. To create each piece, a meticulously patterned bed...

  • Striped Fold III, a Coral Parian Porcelain Sculptural Vessel by Steven Edwards
    By Steven Edwards
    Located in London, GB
Striped Fold III is a unique sculpture by the British artist Steven Edwards, created from white and coloured parian porcelain. Steven Edwards is a ceramic artist whose work investigates the language of making through the materiality and physicality of clay. Fascinated by process-led making, he uses traditional techniques that provoke unanticipated outcomes, using clay as a medium that sustains the narrative of the making process. The resulting forms embody his interaction and manipulation of the clay using bespoke tools to explore the intrinsic properties of the material. His creative practice starts by purposely placing clay under stress to reveal the natural tension and movement in its surface and form. Throughout the whole making process, he pushes, pulls, compresses and slices the material to provoke a reaction. The final forms are a combination of these making scenarios, translating a theme of duality in their appearance – the contrast of visual distortion and precision, the stillness and movement in form and the surface deception between synthetic and natural. Whilst challenging and pushing his material to the limits, often using clay bodies in ways they are not designed for, Edwards purposely exploits unexpected outcomes. Creating a sense of unease, during the making his clay cracks and buckles, resulting in permanent scars that illustrate the extremes that have been asked of it. Purely aesthetic, these fissures within the surface are an important counter point to the idealised sugary-hued confectionery layered rings. Edwards has exhibited his work at premiere contemporary design and craft shows including British Ceramics...
