Large Wide Based Brutalist Middle Eastern Earthenware Lamp Base, 1970s
About the Item
Large and wonderfully shaped earthenware lamp is fully wired, tested and tagged safe for use. It’s a coil pot construction in the style of Dan Arbeid. The wide shape and mineral rustic glaze make this a very attractive lamp.
Based on ancient Middle Eastern hand-building and mineral glazing technique, it will appeal to anyone interested in Organic Modern style, but particular to those who love the rugged Brutalist aesthetic of the 1970s.
It was likely purchased in the late 1960s or early 1970s from Israel, we can say this with confidence as we have listed another two lamp bases like it but unwired, which come from a private collection and were definitely purchased in Israel at that time.
We love the ancient form, deep texture and organic colouring of this vase/lamp. It will set off a Brutalist interior, sit comfortably in a Mid-Century Modern interior or settle in beautifully to a minimalist interior where some Organic Modern detail is needed for texture and warmth. Super-versatile and brings its own organic, living presence. Just wonderful.
In both the West and the Middle East in the 1970s, ceramic artists closely studied archeology and ethnography. They were interested in returning to the ancient roots of pottery via the essentials - hand building, understanding clays and earthenware, basic firing techniques and ancient natural glazes.
This is particularly true for Israeli potters, many of them women, who were exploring ancient Middle Eastern techniques and traditions, styles and forms. This floor lamp originates from that time and place - an attempt to bring back ancient traditions but with a modern eye.
