Swedish floor ashtray in brass and glass by Gunnar Ander for Ystad-Metall
About the Item
This is the Swedish 1950/60s ashtray by Gunnar Ander for Ystad-Metall.
It comes in a thin and elegant floor model in brass and clear glass.
It consists of two pieces. Partly the stand in brass and glass, partly the ash bowl in glass.
The high part, in turn, consists of a circular foot with rounded edges in clear glass and a stand and holder in brass. The wavy base, similar to raw glass, creates an effective depth in the glass.
The ash bowl is square and made of glass. The sides are shaped in a functional way, see pictures.
The Ystad-Metall logo is embossed on the underside of the holder.
____________________
Gunnar Ander (1908-1976) was a Swedish architect and designer. He worked with manly in metal and glass but also wood and nickel silver.
He was born in Linköping, and already showed artistic creativity as a child. So when elementary school was finished and it was time for higher education, it was Stockholm and Konstakademin (the Academy of Fine Arts) that was chosen.
After completing his education and a period as a crafts teacher, he began, around the turn of the decade 1940/50, his successful career at Ystad-Metall with the design of utility and decorative objects. Those years were also the company's best.
Booming exports led to permanent exhibitions in Chicago and New York.
Erik Hovhammar hired Gunnar Ander for Lindshammars Glasbruk in order to develop their design profile.
He designed many classic objects, both utility and art glass. In connection with that, he developed around fifty new glass colors.
Gunnar Ander came to design objects for Lindshammars Bruk until his death.
____________________
Ystad-Metall was founded in 1833.
At first, it mainly manufactured carriage and harness fittings, in addition to chandeliers for churches in the surrounding area.
In 1919, when manager Idoff Göranssons took over management, AB Ystads Metallindustri was formed instead. Manufacturing was focused on driven and chiseled work in both copper and brass. Baptismal basins, photo frames and smoking dishes were among the products. During the 20th century, pewter and bronze objects also appeared on a larger scale.
Ystad-Metall had its heyday from 1920 to a bit into the 1960s.
In 1969, the name Ystad-Metall disappeared in connection with a takeover.
